their places, with the law leading the way and the prophets proclaiming beforehand and the Lord fulfilling. 20Scholion20 ˉξˉε. "He was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and kneeling down he prayed." 20Refutation20 ˉξˉε. Kneeling down he did visibly and performed perceptibly. And if perceptibly, in form * he performed the act of kneeling; therefore the only-begotten did not sojourn without flesh. For to him "every knee shall bow, of things in heaven, and things on earth, and things under the earth," of things in heaven spiritually, of things on earth perceptibly, of things under the earth in its own form. And here he performed all things in truth, being seen and found by touch by the disciples and not as an apparition. 20Scholion20 ˉξˉ. "And Judas drew near to kiss him and said." 2.151 20Refutation20 ˉξˉ. He drew near to a master who was in the flesh and to God who had taken a body, to kiss true lips and not ones that were by appearance and an apparition. 20Scholion20 ˉξˉζ. He cut out what Peter did, when he struck and cut off the ear of the high priest's servant. 20Refutation20 ˉξˉζ. The deceiver, thinking to honor Peter by concealing what truly happened, cutting the saying of the Savior's glorification, concealed it. But it will be of no use; for even if he cuts it out, we know the divine signs. For after the little ear was cut off, the Lord taking it again, healed it, so that it might be shown that he is God and performed the work of God. 20Scholion20 ˉξˉη. "Those holding him mocked him, beating and striking him and saying: Prophesy, who is it that struck you?" 20Refutation20 ˉξˉη. That "holding him" and "mocked him" and to beat and to strike and "prophesy, who is it that struck you," this was not an appearance, but is indicative of bodily touch and an enfleshed substance, and this is clear to everyone, even if you, Marcion, being blinded, do not wish to confess the manifest truth of God. 20Scholion20 ˉξˉθ. He added after "we found this man perverting the nation" "and destroying the law and the prophets." 20Refutation20 ˉξˉθ. From where will you not be caught, from where will you not be refuted for perverting the way of the Lord? For when you add here what is not written, slandering yourself—for I would not say the Lord—and saying that "we found this man destroying the law and the prophets," the counterpart to this will refute you, O futile laborer, of the Savior himself saying "I have not come to destroy the law and the prophets, but to fulfill them." Therefore the same one who says "I have not come to destroy" cannot be accused of destroying. For the saying was not so, but: "we found this man perverting the people, saying that he himself is Christ a king." Scholionˉο. An addition after "forbidding us to give tribute" "and turning away wives and children." Refutationˉο. Who prepares a precipice for himself, fulfilling what is written: "He who is evil to himself, to whom will he be good?" For it is an example of all audacity and wickedness and of a dangerous journey to cut out what is written, and to add what is not written, especially in a gospel which is indestructible for all ages. And the additions themselves have neither place nor hidden meaning. For Jesus did not turn away wives or children; for he himself said "honor your father and mother" and "what God has joined together, let no man separate." But if he should say "unless someone leaves father and mother and brothers and wife and children and so forth, he is not my disciple," it is not that we should hate our fathers, but that we should not be led by the command of fathers and mothers * of another faith or in a way contrary to the teaching of the Savior.
