God promises that he will shatter the yoke of demons and will break the bonds of their impieties by which they were formerly held, so that they no longer serve foreign gods, but bear fruit pleasingly for him alone. 7.3.51 Compare with these the saying in the second Psalm, which speaks of the coming of Christ and the calling of the nations: “Let us break their bonds asunder, and cast away their yoke from us.” To which I think the passage at hand is related, saying: “In that day, said the Lord, I will break the yoke from off their neck and will burst their bonds, and they shall no longer work for foreign gods, but they shall work for the Lord their God.” 7.3.52 But that the Christ of God was foretold to be born “of the fruit of the loins” of David and of the seed of Solomon and “from the root of Jesse,” which indeed happened, and that the divine oracles call him David, along with countless other titles, is sufficient to confirm what has been said; but that he is said to come forth from the tribe of Judah would not even be questioned, since David himself was of no other tribe than the one indicated. And as an added proof of this, there is the oracle in Moses, which runs as follows: 7.3.53 10. From Genesis. “Judah, your brothers shall praise you; your hands shall be on the back of your enemies. Your father’s sons shall bow down to you. Judah is a lion’s whelp; from a shoot, my son, you have gone up. He crouched, he lay down like a lion, and like a whelp; who will rouse him? A ruler shall not fail from Judah, nor a leader from his thighs, until he comes for whom it is reserved, and he shall be the expectation of nations.” 7.3.54 There being twelve tribes among the Hebrews, of which the whole nation was composed, Judah was the forefather and head of one of these tribes, to whom the foregoing things were prophesied, signifying that the Christ would come forth from him. For if you were to bring together and compare the prophecies previously cited with the one at hand, you would find the same one similarly proclaimed by some common sign. 7.3.55 For one said of the one who would arise from the root of Jesse, “and there shall be one who rises up to rule the nations, in him shall the nations hope,” and another said of the son of Solomon, “he shall have dominion from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth,” and “in him shall be blessed” “all the nations,” and the one at hand similarly: “until he comes,” it says, “for whom it is reserved, and he shall be the expectation of nations.” 7.3.56 If, therefore, the prophecies concerning the nations harmonize, and those before these were shown to concern our Savior, then there would be no obstacle to seeing that the present one concerns the same person, if indeed they are acknowledged to prophesy things consistent with each other, especially since up until the times of the appearance of our Savior the rulers and leaders of the Jewish nation were established by succession from their ancestors, but they ceased with his coming, and at the same time the expectation of the nations brought fulfillment to the prophecy of Jacob. 7.3.57 Therefore, here too Christ is indicated and no one else to come forth from the tribe of Judah ... and when he was shown to have come from David and Solomon and from the root of Jesse, he was being shown to be from the same tribe; 7.3.58 For David was the son of Jesse, and Solomon the son of David, having come from the tribe of Judah. Therefore our Savior and Lord would be from it, just as the wonderful evangelist Matthew genealogizes, saying: “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac was the father of Jacob, and Jacob was the father of Judah,” and so on.
