And for this reason the longing for You and the love overcomes all love and longing of mortals. For inasmuch as You are above all things seen, O Savior, by so much is the longing for You greater and it conceals all human love and turns away the desires of carnal pleasures, and it quickly rejects all desires; for the desire for the passions is truly darkness and the practice of shameful sins is a deep night, but the love and affection for You, O Savior, is light. Therefore, rising up in God-loving souls it immediately creates a day of dispassion, O my God, driving away the darkness of passions and pleasures; O wonder, O paradoxical work of God Most High and the power of the mysteries secretly performed! You grant to us both the incorruptible and the corruptible, You also grant earthly things, O God, along with heavenly things, (294) things present together with things to come, O Word, as the maker of all things in every way, as having authority over the heavenly, O Master, and the subterranean; and how do we the wretched love men more than You and wretchedly enslave ourselves to them, in order that we might receive small and corruptible things from them and we give over to them our wretched souls and bodies as dishonored vessels to be misused? And being members, O Master, of You the holy Master of all, entirely holy members of the autocratic Master, do we not shudder at the evil demons as we voluntarily cast ourselves into the dishonorable works of sin? Who then among your faithful and genuine servants will not weep, who will not lament the audacity of such great insolence? And who will not shudder at Your great forbearance, O my God, who will not tremble at the retribution of divine judgment, the unbearable and unquenchable fire, woe is me, of Gehenna, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth and inconsolable pain and unspeakable anguish? But, O sun of sun and moon, creator of all stars and of light and of everything else, hide me outside of these things in Your light, so that seeing only You in Your light I might not see the world nor the things in the world, but seeing, I will be as not seeing
