and gently reminded him about the treason. But when he saw him wandering irreclaimably, turning to him who had once stepped on the back of his robe as he was entering before the emperor, he said: "Do not hurry, for you are hastening to enter the Dihippion." And he, disturbed at the saying along with others who heard it, did not understand the prophecy, which, having come to pass after 15 years in the third year of Constantine the persecutor, in the 12th indiction, persuaded everyone that it had been prophesied by divine grace to the ingrate. For Constantine, after prevailing over the usurpation of the empire by his son-in-law Artavasdos, flogged this Anastasios along with other enemies in the Hippodrome and paraded him through the Dihippion naked, seated backwards on a donkey, as one who had conspired with his enemies against him and had crowned Artavasdos, as will be shown in its proper place. And while in Byzantium this sacred and divine Germanos flourished as a champion of the doctrines of piety, fighting like a beast-fighter against Leo of the same name and his supporters, in elder Rome Gregory, the all-holy apostolic man and co-enthroned with Peter the chief, shone forth in word and deed, who caused Rome and Italy and all the western lands to revolt from both the political and ecclesiastical obedience to Leo and the empire under him. And in Damascus in Syria John Chrysorrhoas, presbyter and monk, the son of Mansour, an excellent teacher, shone forth in life and word. But he cast Germanos out from his throne, as being under his authority; while Gregory most clearly rebuked him through letters for things known to many, and John with the bishops of the east subjected the impious one to anathemas. On the 7th of the month of January of the 13th indiction, on the 3rd day of the week, the impious Leo held a silentium against the holy 409 and venerable icons in the tribunal of the 19 Accubita, having also summoned the most holy patriarch Germanos, thinking to persuade him to sign against the holy icons. But the noble servant of Christ, not being persuaded at all by his abominable evil doctrine, rightly dividing the word of truth, renounced the high priesthood, handing over his omophorion and saying after many didactic words: "If I am Jonah, cast me into the sea. For without an ecumenical council it is impossible for me to innovate the faith, O emperor." And going away to his ancestral home in the so-called Platanion, he lived in quiet, having been high priest for 14 years, 5 months, and 7 days. On the 22nd of the same month of January they ordained Anastasios, falsely so-named, a disciple and syncellus of the same blessed Germanos, who agreed with Leo's impiety, being appointed false bishop of Constantinople through love of worldly power. But Gregory, the holy prelate of Rome, as I said before, repudiated Anastasios along with his libelli, having rebuked Leo through letters as being impious, and caused Rome along with all of Italy to revolt from his empire. The tyrant, therefore, becoming enraged, intensified the persecution against the holy icons, and many clergy and monastics and pious laity ran great risks for the orthodox word of faith, taking up the martyr's crown. Anastasios, bishop of Constantinople, for 24 years. ιδʹ. ζʹ. ʹ. αʹ. κεʹ. In this year Masalmas campaigned against Turkia and, having reached the Caspian Gates, he turned back in fear. ιʹ. θʹ. ηʹ. γʹ. κζʹ. In this year the emperor Leo married the daughter of the Khagan, ruler of the Scythians, to his son Constantine, having 410 made her a Christian and named her Irene; who, having learned the holy scriptures, excelled in piety, refuting their impiety. And Mu'awiyah, the son of Hisham, campaigned against Romanía and, having come as far as Paphlagonia, he returned with many captives. And he
