the emperor was raging against the pope and the apostasy of Rome and Italy, and having equipped a great fleet he sent against them Manes, the general of the Cibyrrhaeots, making him their chief. But the vain man was put to shame when the fleet was shipwrecked in the Adriatic sea. Then the God-fighter, becoming more enraged and strengthened by an Arab mindset, imposed poll taxes on a third part of the people of Sicily and Calabria. And he ordered the so-called patrimonies of the holy and chief apostles, honored in elder Rome, amounting to three and a half talents of gold, which from of old were paid to the churches, to be paid to the public treasury, having commanded that the male infants who were born be watched and registered, as Pharaoh once did to those of the Hebrews; which not even his teachers, the Arabs, ever did to the Christians in the East. ιζʹ. ιʹ. θʹ. δʹ. κηʹ. In this year there was a plague in Syria, and many died. Bishop of Rome, Zacharias, for 21 years. ιηʹ. ιαʹ. αʹ. εʹ. κθʹ. In this year Theodore, the son of Mansur, was exiled to the regions of the desert; and a fiery sign appeared in the sky, illuminating; and Mawiyya plundered Asia. ιθʹ. ιβʹ. βʹ. ʹ. λʹ. In this year Suleiman, son of Hisham, campaigned against the land of the Armenians and accomplished nothing. κʹ. ιγʹ. γʹ. ζʹ. In this year Mawiyya campaigned against Roman territory and, returning not many days later, fell from his horse and died. 411 καʹ. ιδʹ. δʹ. ηʹ. In this year Suleiman, the son of Hisham, after taking many captives from Asia, also took captive a certain man from Pergamon, who said he was Tiberius, the son of Justinian. Hisham sends this man to Jerusalem with appropriate royal honor and troops and banners and scepters, for the honor of his own child and to frighten the emperors, and he commands him to be paraded through all of Syria with much honor for all to see and be astounded. κβʹ. ιεʹ. εʹ. θʹ. In this year Suleiman, son of Hisham, campaigned against Roman territory; and he sacked the so-called Iron Castle, and took Eustathios, the son of Marianos the patrikios, captive. κγʹ. ιʹ. ʹ. ιʹ. In this year, in the month of May, of the 8th indiction, Suleiman campaigned against Roman territory with 9 myriads, and four generals, of whom Ghamr led, laying an ambush in the parts of the land of Asia with ten thousand light-armed troops, and next to him were Malik and Batal with twenty thousand horsemen around Akroinon; and after them Suleiman with sixty thousand around Tyana of the Cappadocians. But those in Asia and Cappadocia, having taken many men, women, and cattle captive, returned unharmed, while those with Malik and Batal were fought down at Akroinon by Leo and Constantine and were defeated. And the majority of them perished by arms along with their two commanders; but about eight hundred fighters from among them, standing against six thousand, fled to Synnada and, having been saved, joined Suleiman and returned to Syria. In the same year in Africa also many of them perished along with the general, a Damascene by name. 412 κδʹ. ιζʹ. ζʹ. ιαʹ. In this year, the 24th of the reign of Leo, the tyrant and most lawless Syrian, marketplaces were burned in Damascus by the Hierakitai, and they were hanged, and the torrent entered Edessa on the 28th of the month of Peritios. And in the same year a great and terrible earthquake occurred in Constantinople on the 20th of the month of October, of the 9th indiction, on the 4th day, at the 8th hour, and churches and monasteries fell, and many people died. The statue of Constantine the Great standing at the Gate of Attalus also fell, along with Attalus himself, and the statue of Arcadius, which stood on the column of the Xerolophos, and the statue of Theodosius the Great at the Golden Gate, and the land walls of the city and cities and villages in Thrace, and Nicomedia in Bithynia and Prainetos and Nicaea, in which one church was saved. The sea also receded from its own boundaries in some places, and the earthquake lasted for 12 months. The emperor, therefore, seeing the walls of the
