For a certain eunuch Nikephoros, also called Nikephoritzes, who before Michael had been slandered for myriad evils and was for that reason in exile, is summoned by Michael and is invested with all authority, a eunuch indeed, clever at confounding affairs and turning things upside down. For everywhere there were accusations, confiscations and unjust demands, then lamentation and woe everywhere. And from this a divinely sent wrath seizes them. For the Turks, seeing that the treaties with Diogenes had remained unfulfilled, and that the one whom they had honored after taking him captive, his own people had treated him so badly, and from this filled with anger, setting out from Persia in great numbers, they march against the Roman themes. Michael then gathers an army there as well, and he appoints Isaac Komnenos 614 as its general; and he, having gone forth and having engaged with the Turks near Caesarea, immediately becomes a captive, and the entire army is destroyed. The emperor learns these things and is gloomy, but he is not completely corrected, since he is led like a slave by the counsels of Nikephoros. Isaac is ransomed.
