not as one polluted, but so that ecclesiastical affairs might not be hindered. οθ. If anyone has a demon, let him not become a cleric, nor even pray with the faithful; but having been cleansed, let him be received, and if he is worthy, let him become one. π. It is not right to appoint immediately to the episcopate one who has come from a Gentile life and been baptized, or from a depraved manner of life; for it is unjust for one who has not yet shown proof of himself to be a teacher of others, unless this might happen by divine grace. πα. We have said that a bishop ought not to involve himself in public administrations, but to be at leisure for ecclesiastical needs; but if not, let him be deposed. 'For no one can serve two masters,' according to the Lord's command. πβ. We do not permit servants to be appointed to the clergy without the consent of their masters, to the sorrow of their owners; for such a thing works the subversion of households. But if at any time a servant should appear worthy for ordination to a rank, such as our own Onesimus appeared, and his masters consent and set him free and send him forth from their own house, let it be done. πγ. A bishop or presbyter or deacon who devotes himself to military service and wishes to do both, to hold a Roman office and to administer a priestly one, must be deposed; 'For the things of Caesar are Caesar's, and the things of God are God's'. πδ. Whoever insults a king or a ruler unjustly, let him pay the penalty; and if a cleric, let him be deposed, but if a layman, let him be excommunicated. πε. Let these be for you all, clergy and laity, the venerable and holy books. Of the Old Testament: five of Moses; one of Jesus son of Nave, one of Judges, one of Ruth, four of Kingdoms, two of Paralipomenon of the book of days, two of Esdras, one of Esther, one of Judith, four of Maccabees, one of Job, one book of Psalms of one hundred and fifty-one, five books of Solomon; sixteen Prophets. In addition, let it be recounted to your young men for them to learn the Wisdom of the very learned Sirach. And our books, that is, of the New Testament, are: four Gospels, as we have also said in what preceded, of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John; fourteen epistles of Paul, one of James, three of John, one of Jude, two of Peter, two of Clement, and the Constitutions addressed to you the bishops by me Clement in eight books, which ought not to be made public
