it issues blasphemy, that you might be angered; but the one who blasphemed himself also received the wound. Therefore groan, lament; for the suffering is worthy of tears. And nothing can heal the one who has been wounded so much as gentleness. For gentleness is more powerful than all violence. See, then, how the one who was insulted himself speaks to us, both in the Old and in the New [Testament]; there saying, My people, what have I done to you? and here, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? And Paul 57.362 also commands to instruct those who oppose in meekness. And when the disciples came to Christ, asking for fire to come down from heaven, he strongly rebuked them, saying: You do not know of what spirit you are. And here too he did not say, O you polluted and sorcerers; O you envious and enemies of men's salvation; but, Why do you think evil things in your hearts? It is necessary, therefore, to remove the disease with gentleness. For he who becomes better out of human fear will quickly return to wickedness again. For this reason he also commanded the tares to be left, giving a period for repentance. Many of them, at any rate, repented and became zealous, who were formerly worthless, such as Paul, the publican, the robber; for though they were tares, these became ripe wheat. For in the case of seeds this is impossible; but in the case of free will it is both easy and simple; for it is not bound by the limits of nature, but has been honored with freedom of choice. Whenever, therefore, you see an enemy of the truth, heal, care for, lead back to virtue, by displaying a most excellent life, by providing irreproachable speech, by offering protection and care, by employing every method of correction, imitating the best of physicians. For neither do they heal in one way only, but when they see that the wound does not yield to the first medicine, they add another, and after that one again another; and now they cut, and now they bandage. And you, therefore, having become a physician of souls, employ every method of healing according to the laws of Christ, that you may receive a reward both for your own salvation and for the benefit of others, doing all things for the glory of God, and in this way also be glorified yourself. For those who glorify me I will glorify, he says; and those who despise me shall be despised. Let us, therefore, do all things for his glory, that we may attain that blessed inheritance; of which may it be that we all attain, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and power for ever and ever. 57.361 HOMILY 30. And as Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man sitting at the
tax collector's booth, called Matthew; and he says to him: "Follow me." 1.
For having performed the miracle he did not remain, lest being seen he should further kindle their jealousy; but he grants them a favor by withdrawing, and soothing their passion. Let us also do this, not proceeding to conflict with those who plot against us, but let us soothe their wound, yielding and relaxing their tension. But why did he not call him with Peter and John and the others? Just as there he appeared at that time when he knew the men would be persuaded; so also he called Matthew then, when he knew he would yield. For this very reason he also fished for Paul after the resurrection. For he who understands the hearts, and knows the secrets of each one's mind, knew also when each of these was going to obey. For this reason he did not call him in the beginning, when he was still more hard-hearted, but after the countless miracles, and the great fame concerning him, when he 57.362.40 knew he had become more fit for obedience. It is also worthy to admire the philosophy of the evangelist, how he does not hide his former life, but also sets down his name, while the others concealed him with another name. And why did he say that he was Sitting at the tax collector's booth? To show the power of the one who called, that not having ceased,
