to use the more intelligent ones for leadership of flight and of dwelling; since the heron is said to be intelligent, so as to very much emulate human habits and to be very epsilon.863 pleasantly disposed towards its owner, which is a characteristic of intelligence. And Jeremiah made clear how it is intelligent. For they say: the stork in the heaven knew her appointed time; speaking of the heron. But Gregory of Nyssa speaks unfavorably about the mating of herons, and that by some necessity of nature they are paired with each other, squatting and being vexed and signifying their displeasure. Whence it seems to me that the word enigmatically signifies purity through this name. But Anastasius the metropolitan of Nicaea says, since he said simply: there the sparrows make their nests, he added this particular kind because of the height of the cedars. And he says that the heron is the leader of such sparrows. But he alludes to a desert-loving kind of bird, whether he calls those homonymously with the heron that lives with men; or whether he alludes to another particular kind of wilder bird, in general he signifies that the heights of the trees are available to certain birds for nesting and dwelling. Erysipelas. A wandering and putrid affliction, and one that spreads to nearby areas. Eros. Desire. From 'horo,' to see. The longing that comes through sensible sight. Or from 'ero,' to desire. Hermeias. A proper name. From 'ero,' to say, or from 'hermeneuo,' to interpret. For the leader of speech is called both Hermeias and Hermes. epsilon.864 (Feminine.) Era. The earth, because it is rooted. And thus they call 'erisai' to strive over level ground. Homer: as in a small space they contend for an equal share—hence also 'eraze,' meaning to the ground. But 'aira,' that of grain, is a diphthong. Ergane. Athena, inasmuch as she is the overseer of the work of women. It also means work itself. Ergatides. Women who do the work of men. Ergiske. A city in Thrace, from Ergiskos, son of Poseidon. Eretria. The name of a city. Ereschelia. Nonsense, contentiousness. From which also 'erescheleitai,' which is to be trifled with and mocked. Erebenne nyx. The dark night. Eremne. Dark. From 'erebos.' 'Erebene' and 'eremne' by syncope. And 'eremnos.' Ereike. A type of cloven plant. Or easily split wood. From 'ereiko,' to split. Hesiod in the Shield: they were cleaving the divine earth. And 'ereixis,' the cloven earth. Ereipios. Fallow land. Ereipiosis. The fall. epsilon.865 Eraia. The branch. It also means the refuse of the olive tree or wool. Ereme dike. When the judge delivers the verdict when the parties are not present. Ereme nike. A victory sought one-sidedly, and which did not receive its conclusion because of certain hindrances. Eremia. Want, scarcity. Eremos. Properly, that which has been left alone by the inhabitants of the land. From 'eremos' by interchange of the elements. Or from having only 'eran,' which is the earth. Eritheia. Zeal, or slander, or evil-speaking, or contentiousness through words. It is also called servitude, and working for hire. Or 'eritheia' is from what someone does ostentatiously or vaingloriously. To summon and provoke others to the same things. Eris. When someone strives to do something in order not to appear inferior to someone. 'Eris' in the Apostle is blameworthy contentiousness through words. From 'ero,' to say. Eripnai. Cavernous places, and extended and broken-off rocks, through which meepsilon.866 great winds enter. 'Eripnoai,' 'eripnai,' instead of great and high. Erinys. A chthonic or avenging spirit. Eriole. A violent blast, or a whirlwind of wind, or of fire, and the swirling of exhalation, before the air is ignited. Eribolax. Good and fertile land. Herse and hersos. The dew. Tasting the moisture of the female dew. For the cicadas feed on dew. From 'ardo,' 'arse' and 'herse.' For all plants are watered and irrigated by it. Hersis. The small plait. From 'eiro,' to weave together. Hersephoria. Dew-bearing. Herselia. Proper name. Eryge. An expulsion of breath from the stomach. Hence also 'exereuxato.' Or a hidden breath that is breathed out upwards as bubbles break during the boiling of food. 'Eryge' and the cry. Erytheia. The name of a city. epsilon.867 Erythra
