foreigners were ruling the Jews, and foreigners, having arrived from the east, both knew and worshipped the long-prophesied Christ of God. Therefore, through these things the prophecy of Jacob is clearly shown to have its end, being fulfilled at the very last of the constitution of the Jewish nation, just as he himself prophesied to his own children, saying: "Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days," we understanding "last days" as the last things of the constitution of the Jewish nation. 8.1.49 What then was destined to happen to them? An eclipse of the rule of Judah, and the destruction of their whole nation, a cessation and end of their leaders, and the abolition of the royal and ruling dignity of his tribe, but the beginning and kingdom of Christ, ruling not Israel but all the nations, according to "and he is the expectation of the nations." 8.1.50 Who would not confess that these things were so clearly fulfilled at the appearance of our Savior, when those who long before the birth of Christ were resplendent under their own rulers and leaders and wise hearers of the divine readings and their own kings and high priests and prophets, and the tribe of Judah itself, being royal, overcoming enemies and foes, ruling and leading the whole nation, and those who long excelled among them, from that time until now have become subject to the Romans? For the Christ of God clearly appeared, and from that time the so-called "expectation of the nations" has been proclaimed to all the nations. 8.1.51 Or let someone say, if it is not so that at the appearance of Jesus our Savior the venerable things among the Jews, both their metropolis along with the temple and the holy rite performed in it, together with their own leaders and rulers, have ceased, and from that time the things of the hope and expectation of the nations throughout the whole world have been revealed, when "the things stored up" for the Lord have also come. 8.1.52 What then are the things signified by "Judah, let your brothers praise you, your hands are on the back of your enemies," "a lion's cub, Judah; from a shoot, my son, you have gone up; having lain down you slept as a lion and as a lion's cub; who will rouse him?" For these, in another sense, are "the things stored up for him." Let us then understand these things, first paying attention to this, that the divine oracles are accustomed to address Christ by various names. For sometimes they call him Jacob: "Jacob my servant, I will help him; Israel my chosen one, my soul has received him, he will bring forth judgment to the nations," and what follows. 8.1.53 to which is added: "until he establishes judgment on the earth, and in his name the nations will hope," but sometimes they name him Solomon and David; Solomon, as in the 71st psalm, inscribed "For Solomon," but clearly containing things about Christ. 8.1.54 For "he will have dominion from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the inhabited world," and "all the nations will serve him," and as many things as the psalm contains following these, would be fitting for Christ alone. 8.1.55 And again, in the 88th psalm, Christ is proclaimed as David, since the things said in it would not be suitable for David alone, such as "He will call upon me, 'You are my father,' and I will make him my firstborn, high above the kings of the earth. For eternity I will keep my mercy for him," 8.1.56 and again: "His seed will remain forever, and his throne as the sun before me, and as the moon established forever." Thus then, with countless other names for Christ, by which the divine words signify him, Judah can likewise be spoken of through the preceding, because he also came from the tribe of Judah; 8.1.57 "for it is evident" according to the apostle "that" our Savior and "Lord has sprung from" the tribe of "Judah." To this Judah, therefore, in this sense, were "stored up" the things prophesied. 8.1.58 What were these? First, to be praised by the
