by day they came to arrest him. Therefore Jesus himself says: "I teach daily" in the synagogue, and now "you have come out as against a robber". 9 They brought a lawless charge against me. They used to read the scriptures "every sabbath," so that they might learn the things of the law. And on the contrary, though it was necessary for them, reading with the law, to know who it is who is prophesied and who is testified to by the scriptures, "they set a lawless charge against me" saying that: "This man does not cast out demons except by Beelzebul." "If this man were from God, he would not break the sabbath." "Did we not say rightly that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?" This is the lawless charge they brought against him. But it is possible, since also in the records of a judge "3he deposed"3 is often taken; they laid down accusations before Pilate against him. 9 Shall not he who sleeps rise again? Therefore he himself says: Since they surrounded me with death, I fell asleep; for in the scriptures the name of sleeping sometimes signifies death. Sleep is also called sleeping, and the union of a man with a woman is called sleeping. And death according to the scripture is also called sleeping because of the expectation of the resurrection; for in the same way that he who sleeps, if he suffers nothing contrary to nature, would be awakened, so he who dies will be raised. Thus, at least, it has been said, "we shall all fall asleep," and: "I do not want you to be ignorant concerning those who have fallen asleep," that is, concerning mortals. The Greeks, at any rate, say this. 10 For even the man of my peace, in whom I hoped. Here "3I hoped"3 [means] "3I trusted"3 concerning the man; for the gospel also mentioned this, that this "man of my peace lifted up a tripping"; for they said that also in the fifty-fourth psalm it says about him: "But you, O man of like soul with me." "If my enemy had reproached me, I would have borne it, and if one who hates me had spoken great things against me, I would have hidden from him. But you, O man of like soul with me" - we take this to mean of one mind, and again "the wife in your bosom" is of like soul with you -, "my guide and my savior." I had you as a guide, not my ruler, but my guide, the one running ahead of me. And here: "the man of my peace, in whom I hoped." It is no wonder, if you have whispered against me and have set a lawless charge against me, if indeed "the man of my peace" has become the leader of this wickedness of yours. "He lifted up" therefore "the heel," not the head, "against me." 10 He who eats my bread has magnified a supplanting against me. "The man of my peace, in whom I hoped," "lifted his heel against me," he wished to supplant me. But it is a wrestling match ····· ····· ····· ···· and Jacob is called a supplanter; for he supplanted Esau, when the blessing ····· ····· ··· the elder. To attack someone with guile is called supplanting. There is some ····· ····· ····· ····agesin, so that he might take his garment. But the one who plots against someone's life ····· ····· ····· ····· ····· 11 But you, O Lord, have mercy on me and raise me up, and I will repay them. 295 Put me outside of the evils and of the supplanting of the evil charge which they set against me. These things again are said in a more human way concerning Jesus according to his humanity. "But you, O Lord, have mercy, and I will repay them." I will be their judge. He who was raised to repay and to judge, gives recompense as he finds their dispositions. Many who have experienced ill-treatment or who see that the one whom they once condemned is himself about to judge them, according to that: "they will look on him whom they have pierced," come to a state of condemnation and know how their just deserts await them. 12 By this I knew that you have delighted in me. This is a knowledge and a proof that I am desired by you; for by this they will know me. The phrase "by this I knew" does not so much refer to his own knowledge, but rather my followers will know by this. "εἰ ἦν οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος παρὰ θεοῦ, οὐκ ἔλυεν τὸ σάββατον̣". "εἰ ὁ ἐχθρός μου ὠνείδισέν με, ὑπήνεγκα ἄν, καὶ εἰ ὁ μισῶν ἐπ' ἐμὲ ἐμεγαλορημόνησεν, ἐκρύβην ἂν ἀπ' αὐτοῦ. σὺ δέ, ἄνθρωπε ἰσόψυχέ μου" -ἐπὶ τοῦ ὁμονοοῦντος λαμβάνομεν, καὶ πάλιν "ἡ γυνη` ̣ ἡ ἐν τῷ κόλπῳ σου" ἰσόψυχός σού ἐστιν-, "ἡγεμών μου καὶ σωτήρ μου". ἡγεμόνα σε εἶχον, οὐκ ἄρχοντά μο̣υ, ἀλλὰ ἡγεμόνα μο̣υ̣, προτρέχοντά μου. καὶ ἐνταῦθα· "ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς εἰρήνης μου, ἐφ' ὃν ἤλπισα". θαυμαστὸν οὐδέν, εἰ ἐψιθυρίσασθε κατ' ἐμοῦ καὶ λόγον παράνομον κατ' ἐμοῦ ἔθεσθε, εἰ γὰρ "ὁ τῆς εἰρήνης μου ἄνθρωπος" ἔξαρχος ὑμῶν τῆς κακίας ταύτης γέγονεν.
