having washed, he is shown to wash away the old filth of those who have believed in him with a bath of wine. 8.1.77 For through the wine, which was the symbol of his blood, he cleanses from their former evils those who are baptized "into his death" and have believed on his blood, washing and wiping clean their old robe and garment, so that they, redeemed "by the precious blood" of the divine and spiritual grape and by the wine from the given vine, might put off "the old man with his deeds" and put on "the new man who is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of his creator." 8.1.78 And "his eyes are gladdening from wine" and "his teeth are white as milk," I think, again secretly contain the mysteries of the new covenant of our Savior. For the gladness from the mystical wine, which he himself delivered to his disciples, saying, "Take, drink, this is my blood which is shed for you for the remission of sins; do this in remembrance of me," seems to me to be signified by "his eyes are gladdening from wine," and "his teeth are white as milk" signifies the brightness and purity of the mysterious food. 8.1.79 For again he himself delivered to his disciples the symbols of the divine economy, commanding them to make the image of his own body. 8.1.80 For since he no longer accepted the sacrifices of blood nor those legislated by Moses with the slaughter of various animals, but delivered the use of bread as a symbol of his own body, he fittingly hinted at the brightness and purity of the food, saying: "And his teeth are white as milk." And another prophet mentioned this, saying: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you have prepared for me." 8.1.81 But these things, requiring more examination and longer interpretation, one might examine at leisure, the present occasion having required so much to be said in order to show, along with other things, that the times of the coming of our Savior, known from above by the prophets of old, have been clearly delivered in the divine Scripture. 8.2.1 From Daniel. "And while I was still speaking and praying, and confessing my sins and the sins of my people Israel, and casting my supplication before the Lord my God concerning the holy mountain of my God; and while I was still speaking in prayer, behold the man Gabriel, whom I saw in the vision at the beginning, flying, and he touched me about the hour of the evening sacrifice, and he gave me understanding, and spoke with me and said, 'Daniel, I have now come forth to give you understanding. 8.2.2 At the beginning of your supplication the word went forth, and I have come to tell you, for you are a man of desires; and consider the word and understand the vision, for you are a man of desires. 8.2.3 Seventy weeks have been decreed upon your people and upon the holy city to finish sin, and to seal up sins and to wipe out iniquities, and to make atonement for injustices and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophet, and to anoint the holy of holies. 8.2.4 And you shall know and understand that from the going forth of the word to answer and to build Jerusalem until Christ the ruler there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; and it shall return and street and wall shall be built, and the times shall be emptied. And after the sixty-two weeks, the anointed one shall be destroyed, and there is no judgment in him; and he shall destroy the city and the sanctuary with the coming ruler, and they shall be cut off in a flood; and until the end of a war that is decreed, with desolations. And he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; and in the midst of the week sacrifice and libation shall be taken away, and upon the temple shall be the abomination of desolations, and until the consummation of time, a consummation shall be given upon the desolation." 8.2.5 Of the seventy-year of the Jewish nation to Babylon
