his right hand." And I will give him power over the sea and over the land; for by the rivers, he signified the land. 27. "He will call upon me: You are my Father. My God and the helper of my salvation;" [when Christ says, "Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me." And when he says again to the apostles: "I am going to my Father and your Father, and to my God and your God."] 28. "And I will make him the firstborn; high above the kings of the earth." These things, however, were not fulfilled either in the case of David, or in the case of the much-celebrated Solomon. For neither Solomon nor David ruled the sea, nor was he named the firstborn of God, nor did he receive authority over all kings. For so also Aquila translated it, Most High [among] the kings of the earth; and Symmachus, Supreme over the kings of the earth. But if these words fit neither David nor Solomon, and the promise of God is true, the Jews are blind in not wanting to worship the one from David according to the flesh, who has power over both the earth and the sea, and is superior to all kings; having willing worshippers, but refuting the weakness of those who dare to speak against him. For using countless devices, they are not able to overcome the laws set by them. And the blessed Paul also calls him firstborn, "that [he] might be the firstborn among many brethren." And, "the firstborn from the dead;" and, "the firstborn of all creation." And the Lord himself said to Mary after the resurrection: "Go and tell my brethren: I am going to my Father, and your Father, and my God and your God. For just as he is only-begotten as God (for he alone was begotten of the Father), so he is firstborn as man (for as man he has as brothers those who have believed); so as God he calls God his Father, but as man he names him his God. 80.1589 In him, therefore, the prophecy received its fulfillment. And what follows also testifies: 29. "Forever I will keep my mercy for him, and my covenant will be faithful to him. [And by covenant he means that which God the Father made with the fathers, that he would raise up, as we say, the Lord from their seed.] 30. "And I will make his seed to endure forever and ever; and his throne as the days of heaven." [His seed are the nurslings of grace, and the kingdom, which he himself gave to them; concerning which the Lord himself said to those who believe in him: "Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world."] Let the Jews, therefore, show that the royal throne of David has lasted until this day, which God promised to keep forever. And let them show his seed adorned with the kingdom. But if they could show neither of these things, and this while being exceedingly shameless; one of two things remains, either to call the promise of God false, or, confessing the promise to be true, to accept the testimony of the facts. For Christ, from David according to the flesh, "sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. For to which of the angels did he ever say: You are my Son, today I have begotten you?" Concerning him the blessed David said, "Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet. Therefore, through the Lord Christ the seed of David remained forever, and his throne endures. For so also the blessed Isaiah prophesied. For having said, A child is born to us, a son is also given to us, whose government is upon his shoulder; [lest anyone suppose the child to be a man, 80.1592 and not God, he showed it more clearly through what follows, by saying:] "And his name is called Angel of great counsel, wonderful, counselor, mighty God, potentate, prince of peace, father of the age to come. He added after a little: Upon the throne of David, and the
