the 59.281 hearers, he utters words full of humility, as if he said: Why are you eager to destroy and persecute me? Wait a little while, and not even if you are eager to hold me will I endure it. Then, lest anyone should think it a common death, the "Yet a little while I am with you" (for they did think this); therefore, lest anyone should think this, and that he would be inactive after death, he added: And where I am, you cannot come. For if he were to remain in death, they would be able to go; for there we all go. So the more simple crowd, was swayed by what was said; the more audacious, it frightened; the more studious, it made hasten to the hearing, as little time was left, and it was not possible to always enjoy this teaching. And he did not say simply, I am here, but, I am with you; that is, even if you persecute, even if you drive me away, for a little while I will not cease to manage things for your sake, and to speak and exhort to you things for salvation. And I go to him who sent me. This was sufficient to frighten, and to cast into agony. For it shows that they will be in need of him. For you will seek me, he says, not only will you not forget me, but also You will seek me, and you will not find me. And where did the Jews seek him? Luke says, that women were mourning for him. And it is likely that many others, both immediately, and when the city was being captured, remembered Christ and his miracles, and sought his presence. He added all these things, wanting to draw them to himself. For the little time remaining, and that he would be longed for after his departure, and that they would no longer be able to find him, were all sufficient to persuade them to come to him. For if his presence was not going to be longed for, he would not seem to them to be saying anything great. Again if it was going to be longed for, but it was possible to find him, not even so would he have troubled them. 4. Again, if he was going to be present for a long time, they would have become complacent. But now from all sides he drives them and frightens them. But the, I go to him who sent me, shows that no harm would come to him from their plot, and that the suffering was voluntary. He therefore foretold two prophecies, that after a little while he would depart, and that they would not come to him; which it was not of a human mind, to foretell his own death. See, then, David also saying: "Lord, make me to know my end, and what is the number of my days, that I may know what I lack." And absolutely no one has learned this. And from the one the other is also confirmed. But I think that he was also hinting at this to the officers, and directing his speech to them, by which he especially drew them, showing that he knew the reason for their arrival, as if he said: wait a little, and I will depart. The Jews therefore said to themselves: Where is this man going to go? And yet those desiring to be rid of him, those doing everything so as not to see him, ought not to have asked this, but to have said, "And we are glad, and when will this be?" But they were affected by what was said, and they ask among themselves, foolishly suspecting, where he is going to go. Not to the dispersion of the Greeks? What is, To the dispersion of the Greeks? The Jews so called the Gentiles, because they were scattered everywhere, and mixed freely with one another. But they themselves later endured this reproach; for they too were a dispersion. For in ancient times the whole nation was gathered into one, and it was not possible to find a Jew elsewhere 59.282, but only in Palestine. In contrast to this they called the Greeks a dispersion, reproaching them and boasting about themselves. What then is, Where I go, you cannot come? But at that time they all mixed with them, and there were Jews everywhere in the world. Therefore, if he meant the Greeks, he would not have said, Where you cannot come. And when they said, Is he going to go to the dispersion of the Greeks? they did not say, And to corrupt them, but, To teach. Thus they had already let go of their anger, and they believed what was said. And if they had not believed, they would not have asked among themselves who he is
