his kingdom, to establish it from now and for eternal time. Thus having prophesied these things concerning the Lord Christ, the word goes through the kings who were in the middle. 31-34. "If his sons forsake my law, and do not walk in my judgments. If they profane my statutes, and do not keep my commandments; I will visit their transgressions with a rod, and their iniquities with scourges. But my mercy I will not take from him, nor will I deal unjustly in my truth." Even if, he says, those who draw their lineage from David commit countless lawless deeds, I will subject them to punishments, but I will keep the promise to David firm. But my mercy I will not take from him, that is, from David, nor will I deal unjustly in my truth. For "deal unjustly," Symmachus has "transgress"; and Aquila, "I will not lie." ["Nor will I deal unjustly," instead of, I will not transgress, nor will I lie concerning my promises.] 35. "Nor will I profane my covenant, and the things that go forth from my lips I will not set aside." I will not lie concerning my promises, I will not transgress the covenants, but I will show the truth of the promises. [when my Son who is co-unoriginate and co-eternal with me is incarnated from David; for he says this through the following words]. 30. "Once have I sworn by my Holy One, that I will not lie to David." For having made a firm promise to him, I will put an end to it; for "I have sworn" is used for certainty, as those who make promises confirm their promises with an oath. 37, 38. "His seed will remain forever; and his throne as the sun before me. And as the moon established forever; and the witness in heaven is faithful." Instead of "the witness," Symmachus has "he who testifies." And in the seventy-first psalm the blessed David prophesied concerning the Lord Christ: "His name remains before the sun, and will co-endure 80.1593 with the sun, and before the moon for generations of generations." For since the sun causes time to be measured, by rising and setting, and making day and night, through the sun, he wished to declare the indestructibility of the throne, and he promised that the seed would endure forever. [And the seed of God the Word are all those who believe in him.] But he who promised and testified these things is in heaven, and uses true and faithful words, as being alone without falsehood. Thus, having spoken the promises made to David, they lament the calamities that befell them. 39, 40. "But you have cast off and despised; you have put off your Christ. You have overthrown the covenant of your servant." But Symmachus has it thus: But you yourself have cast off and rejected, you have been angry with your Christ, you have given the covenant of your servant to a curse. But you yourself, who promised to provide those things, have cast off the descendants of David, and shown them to be worthless, and have delivered them to slavery, and you have destroyed his kingdom, and you have dissolved the covenants made with your servant. For here he calls the kingdom Christ. And the two descendants of David, Jeconiah and Zedekiah, were carried away captive; and with them the kingdom of David came to an end. For Zerubbabel, who ruled after the captivity, was a leader of the people, not a king. "You have profaned his sanctuary to the ground." He calls the temple the sanctuary, which David indeed wished to build, but Solomon built after David; this he says was profaned by the invasion of the Babylonians, and became like a flowering herb. For being destroyed it fell into a heap of earth, and was like a barren land. 41. "You have broken down all his hedges." You have stripped him of all security. "You have made his strongholds a terror." For though he formerly trusted in the walls of the cities, he has lost his courage, and is clothed with cowardice. 42. "All those passing by on the way have plundered him." Moabites, Ammonites, Philistines, Idumeans, Syrians, Assyrians, Babylonians. "He has become a reproach to his neighbors." He became an object of malicious joy and a reproach to those on his borders. 43.

μγʹ.
