Starting from this, the Jews said to our Savior: "This temple was built in forty-six years, and you will raise it in three days?" But these men said the temple was built "in forty-six years." For that is the number of years collected from the first year of the reign of Cyrus, who first sent back from Babylon those of the Jews who wished to return to their own land, until the sixth year of the reign of Darius, in which the entire work of the building was completed. 8.2.65 But Josephus, of the Hebrews, [adds] another three-year period for the completion of the outer structures around the temple ..., so that reasonably, on account of these things, the first seven weeks, extending to forty-nine years, are set apart according to the word of the prophecy, and it happens that the remaining sixty-two are numbered from the reign of Darius, in whose time again Jeshua the son of Jozadak and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, having extended their lives to that time, both presided over the renewal of the temple, while Haggai and Zechariah were prophesying, after whom Ezra and Nehemiah, having likewise come up from Babylon, built the wall for the city, while Joiakim was administering the high priesthood; and he was the son of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, after whom Eliashib succeeded to the high priesthood, then Joiada, after whom Jonathan, after whom Jaddua. 8.2.66 The scripture of Ezra also remembers these, saying: "and Jeshua begat Joiakim, and Joiakim begat Eliashib, and Eliashib begat Joiada, and Joiada begat Jonathan, and Jonathan begat Jaddua." 8.2.67 In the time of this Jaddua, Alexander the Macedonian founded Alexandria, as Josephus records, and coming to Jerusalem, he worshiped God. 8.2.68 Alexander ended his life at the beginning of the one hundred and fourteenth Olympiad, two hundred and thirty-six years after Cyrus, who became king of the Persians in the first year of the fifty-fifth Olympiad. 8.2.69 After the death of Alexander the Macedonian and after the aforementioned high priest, Onias led the nation, having himself also received the honor of the high priests; in his time Seleucus, having seized Babylon, put on the diadem of Asia, in the twelfth year after the death of Alexander, at which time the whole period from Cyrus is summed up to two hundred and forty-eight years. 8.2.70 From this point the writing of the Maccabees begins to number the kingdom of the Greeks. And after Onias, the high priest Eleazar led the Jews, in whose time the Seventy, having translated the divine scriptures, dedicated them to the libraries in Alexandria. 8.2.71 After him another Onias, whom Simon succeeded, in whose time was known Jesus the son of Sirach, who composed the work called All-Virtuous Wisdom. After him another Onias, of the same name as the former, was leader, in whose time Antiochus, having besieged the Jews, forced them to Hellenize. 8.2.72 After him, Judas, surnamed Maccabeus, took charge of affairs and cleansed the land of the impious; whom his brother Jonathan succeeded. And again Simon, at whose death the one hundred and seventy-seventh year of the rule in Syria is counted by the first book of the Maccabees, so called, ending its history at this point in time, 8.2.73 so that from the first year of Cyrus and the kingdom of the Persians to the end of the writing of the Maccabees and to the death of Simon the high priest, four hundred and twenty-five years are summed up. After which Jonathan, as Josephus says, succeeded to the high priesthood for twenty-nine years. After him Aristobulus led for one year, who first after the return from Babylon put on a royal diadem in addition to the high priesthood. 8.2.74 Alexander succeeded him, being both king and high priest, and he too presided over affairs for twenty-seven years; up to whom all things from the first year of the reign of Cyrus and the return of the Jewish nation from Babylon are summed up to four hundred and eighty-two years, over which presided high priests, whom I consider
