to say this, he takes refuge in the philanthropy of God alone and says: Do with me for your name's sake; as if to say this: Not because I am worthy, but for your own sake, because you are philanthropic and merciful. Wherefore he also adds: For your mercy is good. And well did he say, For your mercy is good. For that of men is often not so; for there are times when they use it for harm, and for corruption; but God everywhere does so for what is expedient. Deliver me, for I am poor and needy, and my heart is troubled within me. Do you see him again asking to be saved, not as one who is worthy, nor as one who is righteous, but as one who has been utterly overturned, as one who has been overcome, as one who has suffered countless evils? And my heart is troubled within me. For such is the power of misfortunes; it not only ruins the body, but also disturbs the soul. Like a shadow, when it declines, I am taken away, I am shaken off like locusts. He speaks of the vehemence of the plot of those who did wrong, the unspeakable affliction, and the earnestness shown again by himself in such things 55.264. My knees are weakened from fasting, and my flesh is changed for want of oil. Do you see what kind of weapons he prepares against the plots, and the affliction against him? And I became a reproach to them; they saw me, they shook their heads. Such are the minds of the wicked; not only do they not yield when they see the righteous man intensifying his piety, but they also reproach and mock and trample upon him. What then does he do? He takes refuge in the unconquerable alliance, in the invincible help, saying: Help me, O Lord my God, and save me according to your mercy. And let them know that this is your hand, and that you, O Lord, have done it. What is, This is your hand? That the alliance is yours. That the help, he says, is yours. For I do not wish only to be saved, but also for them to learn from whom I was saved, so that the trophy may be double for me, the crown double, the glory intensified. They will curse, but you will bless. Let those who rise up against me be ashamed, but your servant shall rejoice. From this he teaches the hearer a certain philosophy. For he shows that even if they cast countless curses, when God blesses, there will be no harm from them, but the things of shame, the things of reproach, will be turned back upon them. But your servant will rejoice in you. He said well, In you, showing that from there is the gladness, from whence is the supply of good things. Henceforth, none of the wicked things will be able to disturb me, as long as the gladness from you remains intact for me. Let those who slander me be clothed with confusion, and let them be covered with their shame as with a double cloak. See again how he asks that they be delivered not only to punishment, but to shame, but to confusion, so that it may become a lesson of correction for them, and an occasion for a change to the better. I will give thanks to the Lord exceedingly with my mouth, and in the midst of many I will praise him. For he has stood at the right hand of the poor, to save my soul from those who persecute it. In return for all these things, he offers rewards to God: hymnody, thanksgiving, praise, reporting His achievements to all, becoming a herald in the midst of the theatre of the good things that have come to him. For this is a sacrifice, this is an offering: to always bring to remembrance the benefactions of God, and to inscribe them on the mind, and to proclaim them with the mouth, and to make many hearers of his benefactions. For in this way he who has enjoyed the benefaction will receive a reward of gratitude, and will draw down more favor from God; and those who hear will become more earnest from the things that happen to others, and will take the benefaction of others as the greatest occasion for the zeal of virtue.
