may stir up. And there was peace between the Romans and the Persians, especially since Antiochus wrote much on behalf of the Christians. And thus Christianity was spread also in Persia. Theodosius the Younger, the orthodox emperor of the Romans, reigned for 42 years and 2 months; during his reign, Pulcheria his sister, being a virgin of 19 years, administered the empire well, who educated her brother Theodosius in piety according to God and in all other things. He was of medium stature, 1.587 of the well-proportioned, having eyes larger in the circle of their eyelids, both dark and sharp-sighted. A nose thin and straight. With honey-colored hair, having partaken of all education, even astronomy, and trained in riding and archery beyond the moderate, and having modeled many of the manual arts with natural dexterity, such as painting and sculpting and many others, gentle in manner and exceedingly mild. whence also ... and many of the common affairs fell through, being overcome by his respect for the eunuchs. For since his father had died, he was under the tutelage of Antiochus sent from Isdigerdes as a guardian, then he considered Eutropius his master, after him Lausus and Calapodius, and in addition to these Chrysaphius enslaved him. And Pulcheria, having established many churches and poor-houses and hostels and monasteries, royally assigned to all of them suitable revenues. And Sozomen says that she was also deemed worthy of divine visions. In the second year, Atticus, bishop of Constantinople, after admonishing a certain paralytic Jew, and persuading and baptizing him, brought him forth healthy from the font. In the third year, while Honorius was reigning in Rome, that is, of the western parts, he being in Ravenna, and Theodosius in Constantinople, the most illustrious Stelechon was slain in Ravenna and other powerful men. He was the father-in-law of Honorius and presided over all the affairs 1.588 of the empire. And Rome was also taken by Alaric the Goth, the leader of the Vandals, she who was so great and of such a size and renowned throughout the whole world, having escaped such a fate for, one might say, an infinite age; for one thousand one hundred and sixty years had passed, in which it had happened that she was tested by many greater enemies. But now she was captured by destiny through the foolishness of her rulers, if indeed it is possible to say that anything happens apart from this. And they say that Scipio, surnamed Africanus, when he was destroying the walls of Carthage, weeping, spoke that Homeric verse over Rome: "A day will come when sacred Ilium shall perish." This, at any rate, was brought to pass, and she who was so great in power, and had provided for all the greatest things and had enslaved, so to speak, the whole inhabited world, Rome was utterly desolated. She suffered such a capture in the month of August on the 20th, in the 9th indiction, in the year from the creation of the world #225665. And when this was heard in Ravenna, someone announced to Honorius, weeping and lamenting, "O master, Rome has been captured by Alaric, the ruler of the Vandals." But he, convulsed and clapping his hands, said, "She was here until just now, and how was she taken by the Goths?" But he, sighing, said, "I do not mean the bird, master, but the city." And he replied, "You have startled me, man; I thought you meant the bird." For he had a hen in which he delighted, which he called Rome; so great was his abundance of stupidity, not to say 1.589 a proof of folly. And it is not surprising that being such a man he reigned, since certain others also ruled Rome before, whose deeds and irrational impulses it is impossible to accept by hearing; think of the Neros and the Avituses and Galbas and Othos, and if there is any other swarm of such men.

After the capture of Rome, Honorius died of dropsy, having lived 40 years, and having reigned 31, leaving behind a dishonorable and unseemly memory in his life. And when his death was announced in Constantinople, the whole city was shaken for 7 days. And Theodosius at the time of Honorius' death was in the 24th year of his age, and of his reign
