having made one, showing it as many, they said, These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
1015 Ps 106 arg And the following psalm, containing God's benefactions and
mercies that have come to men, being a praise of him, has the "alleluia" set before it. 1016 Ps 106,1bc For whom the surrounding afflictions are changed (they themselves having contributed nothing to this), having recognized that they have these things by the mercy of a good God, would say the preceding verses. And since there are some who come to be in what are considered temporary good things, these simply have experience of God's mercy, while those who have eternal good things from him are shown mercy forever. For the good God himself said to someone, With everlasting mercy I have had mercy on you. So also he shows mercy to thousands of those who love him, preparing for them what eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man. It has been said before that "good" is synonymous with "kind." 1017 Ps 106,4 Wherefore, being in a wilderness of virtues, we wandered, not having a guide and leader whom by following we would have been able to find after the journey a city well-ordered by a sacred law in which we could dwell not departing from it. And virtue is also the wisdom of God. 1018 Ps 106,10b And since the preceding poverty is contrary to being rich in every word and all knowledge and in good works, he who is released from these evils will not even be tried by punishments. 1019 Ps 106,17 While they were still walking the road of their iniquity, the merciful God took hold of them, since on account of the multitude of the impieties which they had, having been humbled, they were held fast by the things from which he raised them up. And see if you can apply to these things the story of the thief who repented on the cross; for while he was still on the road of iniquity (for he had been condemned for robbery) and had been humbled by punishment on account of the iniquities which he had, he took hold of him, saying to him, Today you will be with me in paradise. 1020 Ps 106,18.19 In general, both in the case of the body and of the soul, one who is sickly because of some disease loathes all food, both physical and spiritual, but those who have health of soul hunger and thirst for righteousness. And the gates of death are the sins that lead to death. Those approach these who, before coming to him, still having a vital breath and power, I mean the concept of God; therefore when they are afflicted they cry to the Lord, and he saves them from all the necessities that hold them. And if they had not cried to the Lord, they would have reached even to death itself. 1021 Ps 106,22b And everyone who declares what has happened to himself and has had experience of his beneficence declares his works with exultation, not the one who simply relates what has happened to others. 1022 Ps 106,26 And that the waters are said to ascend up to heaven and to descend to the abyss is said by way of hyperbole. For you would find countless examples of such a manner of speaking in scripture; for concerning the cities of the enemies of Israel, that they were walled up to heaven because they were walled with high walls, and "I will be made whiter than snow" is said in the same manner. 1023 Ps 106,38b Others say: the so-called sheep would be cattle, which will have multitude and greatness on account of having achieved gentleness and teachableness. 1024 Ps 106,42b But also, having nothing to say against the economy of God concerning the nations, will shut her mouth. And you will understand iniquity to be the devil and everyone who is formed according to it, according to "The mouth of those who speak iniquity was stopped." 1025 Ps 106,43 Since much of it relates to the spiritual understanding, it is for the wise and intelligent to comprehend it.
