God from God, God the Word, is also co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit. Thus, therefore, my soul is also according to the image of this, for having a mind and bearing a word it bears these things indivisibly and unconfusedly in substance, likewise of one substance, one the three unitedly, but also dividedly. And they are always (326) united and are divided: for they are united without confusion and are divided without division. If you should take away one of these, you have altogether taken away all; for a mindless, wordless soul will be the same as the irrational creatures; and without a soul it is not possible for a mind or word to exist. Thus therefore, from the image understand the archetype! Without the Spirit there is no Father, nor His Word; but the Father is spirit, and His Son, spirit, even if he put on flesh, and God the Spirit again; for the two are one in nature and substance, just as mind, soul, and word. But the Father begot the Word ineffably. Just as the mind from my soul, or rather in my soul, so the Spirit is from the Father, or rather both remains in the Father and proceeds unspeakably. Οὕτως οὖν καί ἡ ψυχή μου κατ᾿ εἰκόνα τούτου ἔστι, νοῦν γάρ ἔχουσα καί λόγον φέρει ταῦτα κατ᾿ οὐσίαν ἄτμητα ἀσύγχυτά τε, ὁμοούσια ὡσαύτως, ἕν τά τρία ἡνωμένως, ἀλλά καί διῃρημένως. Πάντοτε καί ἥνωνταί γε (326) καί εἰσί μεμερισμένα˙ ἥνωνται γάρ ἀσυγχύτως καί μερίζονται ἀτμήτως. Ἕν ἐκ τούτων εἰ καθέλῃς, συγκαθεῖλες πάντως πάντα˙ ψυχή γάρ ἄνους, ἄλογος, ἴσον ἔσται τῶν ἀλόγων˙ ἄνευ δέ ψυχῆς οὐκ ἔστι νοῦν ἤ λόγον ὑφεστάναι. Οὕτως οὖν ἐκ τῆς εἰκόνος τό πρωτότυπον ἐννόει! Ἄνευ Πνεύματος οὐκ ἔστι οὐ Πατήρ, οὐ Λόγος τούτου˙ πνεῦμα ὁ Πατήρ δέ ἔστι, καί Υἱός ὁ τούτου, πνεῦμα, εἰ καί σάρκα ἐνεδύθη, καί Θεός τό Πνεῦμα πάλιν˙ ἕν γάρ φύσει καί οὐσίᾳ τά ἀμφότερα τελοῦσιν, ὥσπερ νοῦς, ψυχή καί λόγος. Ἀλλ᾿ ὁ μέν Πατήρ τόν Λόγον ἀπεγέννησεν ἀρρήτως. Ὥσπερ νοῦς ἐκ τῆς ψυχῆς μου, μᾶλλον δέ ἐν τῇ ψυχῇ μου, οὕτως ἐκ Πατρός τό πνεῦμα, μᾶλλον δ᾿ ἐν Πατρί καί μένει καί προέρχεται ἀφράστως.
