He commands to await the test. How then did he himself remain with a tax collector? 57.384 Because he had become worthy from his change. But you, consider for me how, having stripped them of everything, he gave them everything, permitting them to remain in the houses of their disciples, and to enter having nothing. For in this way they were both freed from care, and they persuaded those people that they had come for their salvation alone, both by carrying nothing with them, and by asking for nothing more than the necessities, and by not simply entering the houses of everyone. For he did not wish them to appear glorious from their signs alone, but also before the signs, from their own virtue. For nothing so characterizes philosophy as simplicity and, as far as possible, lack of need. This the false apostles also knew; For this reason Paul also said: That wherein they glory, they may be found even as we. But if, being in a foreign land and going to strangers, it is necessary to seek nothing more than daily food, how much more so when remaining at home. 2. Let us not only hear these things, but also imitate them. For it was not spoken concerning the apostles only, but also concerning the saints after them. Let us therefore become worthy of receiving them. For from the disposition of those who receive, this peace both comes and departs again. For this comes about not only from the boldness of the teachers, but also from the worthiness of the recipients. Let us not consider it a small loss not to enjoy such peace. For this the prophet also proclaims from of old, saying: How beautiful are the feet of them that preach peace! Then, interpreting its dignity, he added, of them that preach good things. Christ also declared this to be great, saying: Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you. And we must do all things so as to enjoy it, both in the house and in the church. For in the church also the one who presides gives peace. And this is a type of that, and it is necessary to receive him with all eagerness, with the mind before the table. For if it is grievous not to share from the table, how much more grievous would it be to reject the one speaking? For you the presbyter sits, for you the teacher stands, laboring and toiling. What defense, then, will you have, not even offering him a reception by your listening? For the church is a common house for all, and when you have gathered beforehand, we enter, preserving their pattern. For this reason, upon entering immediately, we also pronounce peace to all in common, according to that law. Therefore let no one be idle, no one distracted, when the priests and teachers enter; for no small punishment is set for this. For I would wish ten thousand times to enter the house of one of you and be at a loss, than to speak here and not be heard. This is more grievous to me than that, since this house is also more important. For our great possessions lie here; here are all our hopes. For what is not great and awesome here? For this table is much more honorable and pleasant, and this lampstand than that lampstand. And they know how many sicknesses they have healed by anointing with oil with faith and at the right time. And this chest is much better and more necessary than that chest; 57.385 for it does not have garments, but alms shut up within, even if there are few who possess them. Here also is a couch better than that one; for the repose of the divine Scriptures is sweeter than any couch. And if we had [the things of concord set right], we would not have had another house besides this one. And that what has been said is not burdensome, the three thousand and the five thousand bear witness, who had one house and one table and one soul: For of the multitude of them that believed, it says, the heart and the soul were one. But since we fall far short of their virtue, and are separated into our several houses, at least when we are gathered here, let us do this with eagerness. For if in other things we are poor and needy, [but in these things we are rich. Therefore] at least here receive us with love as we enter in to you. And when I say, 'Peace be with you,' then you say, 'And with your spirit'
