Which Isaiah also, making this clear, likewise said: Whose dominion is upon his shoulder; that is, in him, in his substance, in his nature, which is not the case with kings. For their dominion is in the multitude of their armies; which was not the case with the apostles. For their dominion also was by a power brought in to them from without; but he had his dominion in his nature, in his substance, not having acquired it later after being born, nor having obtained it as something adventitious, but was so born. Wherefore also, when asked about his kingdom, he said: For this I was born, and for this I have come. With you is the dominion in the day of your power. But the saying, With you is the dominion, declares not only these things which have been said, but other things as well, such as that his dominion is not in another, but is both continual and immortal. For it often fails men even while they live; and if not while they live, then certainly when they die; or rather, when they are alive, it is not even with them; but, as I said before, it is in armies and bodyguards, and abundance of wealth, and surrounding walls, and all other such things; but in the case of God, not only is this not so, but it is in him and perpetually; and just as it is impossible for his substance not to be, so also for his kingdom. In the day of your power. One might call the day of power both the one that has already happened and the one that is to come. For each is a proof of the greatest power. Or does it not seem to you to be the greatest proof of power, when through death death is abolished, when brazen gates are shattered, when sin is destroyed, when the curse is loosed, when all the old evils are overthrown, and other new good things are brought in? For what is equal to this power, whether you examine the miracles or the achievements? The dead were raised, lepers were cleansed, demons were driven out, the sea was bridled, sins were forgiven, the paralyzed were strengthened, paradise was opened, rocks were rent, the 55.273 veil was torn, the sun's rays were turned back, and darkness covered the world, the bodies of the sleeping saints were raised, the thief returned to his ancient homeland, the vaults of heaven were thrown open, the nature that had been trampled down was raised up above the heaven of heavens to the heights, and what is greater than this, sat upon a royal throne, with angels and the powers standing by her; all wickedness was driven out, virtue was brought back, the grace of the Spirit was given, fishermen, and tax collectors, and tentmakers sewed up the mouths of philosophers, turned back the tongues of orators, and overthrew the tyranny of demons; altars, and temples, and feasts, and Greek festivals were dissolved; the savor of sacrifice and smoke, and all the accursed victims were driven out by force, diviners and priests of Cybele, and augurs, and the whole workshop of the devil fled, Churches sprouted up everywhere in the world, choirs of virgins were formed, orders of monks, along with the cities the desert also was filled with piety, and choirs of righteous and holy men, standing, echoed the higher powers of the angels in their melody, and peoples of martyrs, and multitudes of confessors were planted everywhere in the world, virtue was accomplished with much ease, barbarian nations were taught to be philosophers, and those more savage than wild beasts demonstrated rivalry for the way of life of the angels, and the word ran over as much land as the sun looks upon after the cross and the resurrection. Considering all these things, the Prophet said: With you is the dominion in the day of your power. 6. But if you wish also to see the coming day, and to learn how that too is a day of his power, consider how great a thing it is to see the heaven being rolled up, and all corruptible nature rising up, and to the
