of you; say it not with the voice only, but also with the mind; not with the mouth, but also with the thought. But if here you say, "Peace also to your spirit," but outside you make war on me, spitting and speaking ill, secretly washing me with countless reproaches, what peace is this? For I, even if you speak ill of me ten thousand times, with a pure heart I give you peace, with a sincere mind, and I am never able to say anything evil about you; for I have a father's compassion. And if I ever rebuke, I do this out of concern. But you, biting in secret, and not receiving me in the Lord's house, I fear that you may increase my despondency again; not because you have insulted, nor because you have cast out, but because you have rejected the peace, and have drawn upon yourself that harsh punishment. For even if I do not shake off the dust, even if I do not turn away, the things of the threat remain unmoved. For I often say peace to you, and I will never cease saying this; but if along with the insults you do not receive it, not even so do I shake off the dust; not because I disobey the Lord, but because I am intensely inflamed for you. Besides, I have not suffered anything because of you; I did not go on a long journey, nor did I come with that habit and poverty (for this we first blame ourselves), nor without sandals and a second tunic; for this reason perhaps you also fail in what is due from you. But nevertheless this is not sufficient for your defense; but for us the judgment is greater, and it does not grant you pardon. 7. Then houses were churches, but now the church has become a house. Then there was nothing worldly to say in a house; now there is nothing spiritual to say in church, but even here you bring in things from the marketplace; and while God is speaking, you cease to listen in silence to what is said, you bring and contribute contrary matters; and would that they were your own; but now you both say and hear things that in no way concern you. For these things I lament, and lamenting I will not cease. For I am not master to change this house, but it is necessary to remain here, until we depart from the present life. Therefore make room for us, as Paul commanded. For what was said by him there was not about a table, but about mind and thought. 57.386 This we also seek from you, love, that fervent and genuine friendship. But if you cannot bear even this, at least love yourselves, putting away your present indifference. This is enough for our comfort, if we see you prospering and becoming better. Thus I myself will also show greater love, "Though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved." For there are many things that unite us; one table is set before all, one Father has begotten us, we have all been delivered from the same birth-pangs, the same drink has been given to all; or rather not only the same drink, but also to drink from one cup. For the Father, wishing to lead us to tender affection, also contrived this, that we drink from one cup; which is a mark of intense love. But we are not worthy of the apostles. I too confess it, and I would never deny it. Not only of them, but we are not even worthy of their shadow. But nevertheless let what is on your part be done. This will not be able to put you to shame, but will even benefit you more greatly. For when you show such great love and obedience even to the unworthy, then you will receive a greater reward. For we do not say our own things; since you have no teacher on earth; but what we have received, we also give; and in giving we seek nothing more from you, but only to be loved. But if we are unworthy even of this, yet from loving you we shall quickly become worthy. And yet we were commanded, not only to love those who love us, but also our enemies. Who then is so harsh, who so savage, as, having received such a law, to turn away from and hate those who love him, even if he is full of ten thousand evils? We have partaken of a spiritual table; let us also partake of spiritual love. For if robbers, sharing salt, forget their character, what defense will we have, who always partake of the Lord's body, and not even their

Οὕτω καὶ αὐτὸς μείζονα ἐπιδείξομαι τὴν ἀγάπην, Εἰ καὶ περισσότερον ἀγαπῶν, ἧττον ἀγαπῶμαι. Καὶ γὰρ πολλὰ ἡμᾶς ἐστι τὰ συνάγοντα· μία τράπεζα πρόκειται πᾶσιν, εἷς ἐγέννησεν ἡμᾶς Πατὴρ, τὰς αὐτὰ, πάντες ἐλύσαμεν ὠδῖνας, τὸ αὐτὸ ποτὸν ἅπασι δέδοται· μᾶλλον δὲ οὐ μόνον τὸ αὐτὸ ποτὸν, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐξ ἑνὸς ποτηρίου πίνειν. Ὁ γὰρ Πατὴρ, βουλόμενος ἡμᾶς εἰς φιλοστοργίαν ἀγαγεῖν, καὶ τοῦτο ἐμηχανήσατο, ἐξ ἑνὸς ποτηρίου πίνειν ἡμᾶς· ὅπερ ἐπιτεταμένης ἐστιν ἀγάπης. Ἀλλ' οὐκ ἐσμὲν ἄξιοι τῶν ἀποστόλων ἡμεῖς. Ὁμολογῶ κἀγὼ, καὶ οὐκ ἄν ποτε ἀρνηθείην. Οὐ μόνον ἐκείνων, ἀλλ' οὐδὲ τῆς σκιᾶς ἄξιοι τῆς ἐκείνων ἡμεῖς. Ἀλλ' ὅμως τὰ παρ' ὑμῶν γινέσθω. Οὐδὲν ὑμᾶς τοῦτο καταισχῦναι δυνήσεται, ἀλλὰ καὶ ὠφελῆσαι μειζόνως. Ὅταν γὰρ καὶ περὶ ἀναξίους τοσαύτην ἐπιδείξησθε τὴν ἀγάπην καὶ τὴν ὑπακοὴν, τότε μείζονα λήψεσθε τὴν ἀνταπόδοσιν. Οὐδὲ γὰρ τὰ ἡμέτερα λέγομεν· ἐπεὶ μηδέ ἐστιν ὑμῖν διδάσκαλος ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· ἀλλ' ἃ παρελάβομεν, καὶ διδόαμεν· καὶ διδόντες οὐδὲν πλέον ἐπιζητοῦμεν παρ' ὑμῶν, ἀλλ' ἢ τὸ φιλεῖσθαι μόνον. Εἰ δὲ ἀνάξιοι καὶ τούτου, ἀλλ' ἀπὸ τοῦ φιλεῖν ὑμᾶς ἄξιοι ταχέως ἐσόμεθα. Καίτοιγε προσετάγημεν, μὴ τοὺς φιλοῦντας φιλεῖν μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς. Τίς οὖν οὕτως ἀπηνὴς, τίς οὕτως ἄγριος, ὃς τοιοῦτον δεξάμενος νόμον, καὶ τοὺς φιλοῦντας ἀποστραφήσεται καὶ μισήσει, κἂν μυρίων κακῶν ἀνάμεστος ᾖ; Ἐκοινωνήσαμεν τραπέζης πνευματικῆς· κοινωνήσωμεν καὶ ἀγάπης πνευματικῆς.
