to intercede on their behalf. thus also the spiritual sacrifices, being a sacrifice of praise and righteousness, he offers to the Father on our behalf, but he has also offered himself as a sacrifice for all for the salvation of the universe. 1042 Ps 109,5.6 After the Father said to the Son, "Sit at my right hand," now it is said, "The Lord is at your right hand," so that it is made clear that the Son is not at the right hand of the Father in a local sense. for behold, at the same time he is at the right hand and his Father is at his right hand, which is impossible if "at the right hand" were understood locally. Therefore, as the Father is in the Son and the Son is in the Father, so the Son is the right hand of the Father. And the Father of the Son is at his right hand; he shatters on the day of his wrath the intelligible kings, being none other than the principalities and powers and world-rulers of darkness. These are the same ones who are placed under the feet of the Savior, being his enemies because of the wickedness and evil they chose, except that having been shattered they will cease to be enemies, when every such principality and every such power is abolished by the Lord. The day of the Lord's wrath is called in the scriptures the time of the judgment of all at once. And when these things are thus accomplished, God will fill the nations with corpses, leaving no one empty and without a share of his fullness among those who have fallen for salvation, so that they may rise to eternal life. For he himself, from whose fullness the saints have received, is set for the fall and rising of many, casting down and causing to fall those who have a wicked standing by seeming to be established in wickedness and impiety, in order to raise them to a resurrection of life, so that they might henceforth use him as head, after the wicked kingdoms which he called "heads of many" have been shattered, being called "many" because of being widely diffused through wickedness. For since it was not possible for them to have both those and him as head, that is, king, while he was first still on the earth, having shattered the rulers of the nations who ruled for evil, he himself, lawfully reigning over them, is the head of every man who exists according to the inner man, and of the blameless church. The cause of all these things has been established as his having drunk from a torrent, having come to be in the way of human life. For the last verse alludes to this, saying, "He will drink water from a torrent in the way; therefore he will lift up his head." 1043 Ps 109,7 The torrent in many places, as also here, signifies temptation, and to drink from it is to undertake it. And Jesus was tempted for the sake of salvation, having come to be in the way of men, as the apostle says, writing thus: "For in that he himself has suffered being tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted." of whom he was also shown to be king, when authority was given to him in heaven and on earth, he lifted up his head, appointed by the Spirit as ruler not only of those on earth but also of those in the heavens, so that every knee should bow to him, of things in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The cross bears the symbol of this exaltation. And all these things will be said about the Word who became flesh. For even if he is one and the same, nevertheless, according to the concept, the preceding things will be suited to his incarnate presence.

1044 Ps 110,1 And a little before, a tradition of the ancients which we knew

we set down that those psalms inscribed with "Alleluia" belong to them, which are arranged among the former ones, to which also here from Psalm 110 to 118 "Alleluia" is prefixed, with no speaker's person being indicated of whom each of these is. Since, therefore, Psalm 109 is inscribed "of David," it is necessary, as far as his tradition is concerned, that all the succeeding ones up to 118 also belong to him. And let this be a general observation for all the uninscribed psalms. And the holy one, about to proclaim the things done by the Lord for the salvation of the universe, cries out beforehand the

Πάντα δὲ ταῦτα περὶ τοῦ γενομένου σαρκὸς λόγου εἰρήσεται. εἰ γὰρ καὶ εις καὶ αὐτὸς τυγχάνει, ἀλλ' ουν κατὰ τὴν ἐπίνοιαν ἁρμόσει τῇ ἐνσάρκῳ αὐτοῦ παρουσίᾳ τὰ προκείμενα.
