the utterances set forth. But with a whole heart confesses every man, and only he who has loved God with his whole heart and soul and mind; and having extended all his capacity for love to God, he loves God with his whole heart, and having spent all his capacity for hymn-singing and thanksgiving on God, he confesses to him with his whole heart in the assembly of the upright, not in a random place or with random people. It is possible, after punctuating at ‘With a whole heart,’ to read what follows: ‘In the counsel of the upright, and in the congregation, the works of the Lord are great.’ 1045 Ps 110,2 While the will of the Lord is named in a universal and general way, the particular things concerning his individual works would be his specific wills. If, therefore, he has done all that he willed, the creation universally depends on his will, with each created thing being harmonized with his specific wills. Therefore, since the creator is great, his works are also great, very precisely crafted for harmony with his wills; for they are not as they happened to be, but they are sought out unto all his wills. Therefore, since the works have been sought out, let no one say, ‘To what purpose is that?’ For all things were created for their need; therefore all the works of God are very good. But if one should take as works of God the things accomplished paradoxically and wondrously (on the one hand through Moses and the prophets, and on the other hand through Jesus our savior), the preceding sayings could also be spoken about these. For Jesus, by accomplishing the resurrections of the dead and the cleansings of lepers and the restorations of sight to the blind and things similar to these, was symbolically showing through them the healings of the inner man, which are all preeminently God's wills. And if one should also take the virtues to be called wills of God on account of ‘Who will do all my wills,’ he will say that the activities according to virtue are great works sought out unto all the wills of God. 1046 Ps 110,5.6 And according to the saying, however, he gives food especially to those who fear him with a certain miraculous power, as to Daniel when he was having his meal in the lions' den in Babylon; from Jerusalem he raised up Habakkuk and brought him through the air to Babylon, carrying the food to Daniel himself. But also, having commanded ravens to bring bread in the morning and meat in the evening to Elijah (when a great famine was occurring), he fed him who feared the Lord. And when his old covenant, which was given until the time of reformation, came to an end, he will be mindful forever of the new covenant according to the gospel, which remains without a successor. Therefore also to the people whom he purchased with his own blood through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Spirit, Jesus gives the strength of his works, showing them what kind of power each of the things has which he commanded the people to do, and the accounts of the things that have happened. He will be mindful forever of his covenant. When a partial hardening happened to Israel, the fullness of the Gentiles entered into salvation. But since God is good, not being content with only the fullness of the Gentiles entering into the undefiled and glorious inheritance, he is mindful forever of the covenant with the sons of Israel for the sake of their fathers. He will announce the strength of the works which he has done to the Israelite people, so that they, having contemplated the power of the economy, may also be saved after the fullness of the Gentiles has entered, receiving from God the inheritance that was appropriated and confirmed to the Gentiles. 1047 Ps 110,7.8 In many places of the divine oracles we find the Lord called the hand of the Father, as in ‘My high hand has made all these things.’ For the Word through whom are all things and the Wisdom in which the Father made all things is his hand which created the universe. But also by bringing the people out of Egypt with a mighty hand, God accomplished this in the same Son, as one of the apostles writes: ‘Jesus, having once saved a people out of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.’ And since other scriptures also that God did not make with one hand
