And He simply bestowed upon each of men the gift and advantage according to his worth, as God alone knows, the Creator of all things, so that he might act usefully in life in an ineffable way. Therefore each person is suited not for the craft which he himself wishes, but for that for which he was created, and he is disposed toward it suitably and naturally, and you might see the sailor skillfully sailing the expanses of the sea and delighting more than the man mounted on a proud horse, and the farmer cutting the furrows of the earth with the plow, and considering the yoke of his collaborating oxen far better than a royal four-horse chariot, whence he also rejoices, luxuriating in good hopes. The soldier, in turn, considers himself greater than all farmers and sailors and artisans and, as if glorious, puts on airs, running to slaughter and to end in an untimely death. This man, then, will not endure to ply an oar at all, nor to hold a two-pronged hoe, nor to become a carpenter, nor a sailor nor a farmer, nor will he choose to be a husbandman; but each, as I said, will act according to that which he received from God to do, (395) and otherwise a man will not be able to accomplish anything at all in life or even wish to begin. For behold, again I tell you what I also said before: just as it is never possible for any of the aforementioned tools to be moved of itself to an action or to do anything without the hand of a man, who lifts it and fashions something with it, so also man without the divine hand is not able to conceive or do anything good. For behold, the Word, the artisan, fashioned me such as He Himself willed and placed me in the world. How then, tell me, will I be able to think or to do or to effect anything at all without divine strength? He who granted me a mind, such as He willed in every way, He Himself both gives me to think what He knows is profitable, and provides me the power to do what He wishes. If then I should do these things, He will surely give more, and will philanthropically grant me to think more perfect things; but if I should despise even the few things entrusted to me, I will in truth justly suffer deprivation from God who gave them and I will become inactive, a useless tool, as not having wished to work the commandments of the creator, but having given myself over to sloth and indolence; and for this reason I am cast from the hands of the Master, for disobedience and insubordination toward him

ἁπλῶς τε ἐχαρίσατο ἑκάτῳ τῶν ἀνθρώπων τό κατ᾿ ἀξίαν δώρημα καί πλεονέκτημά γε, ὡς οἶδε μόνος ὁ Θεός, ὁ τῶν ἁπάντων κτίστης, εἰς τό χρησίμως ἐνεργεῖν ἐν τῷ βίῳ ἀρρήτως. ∆ιό πρός τέχνην ἕκαστος οὐχ οἵαν αὐτός θέλει, ἀλλά πρός οἵαν ἔκτισται, ἐπιτηδείως ἔχει, καί πρός αὐτήν διάκειται προσφυῶς καί οἰκείως, καί ἴδοις ἄν τόν πλευστικόν εὐτέχνως τά πελάγη θαλάσσης διαπλέοντα καί τερπόμενον μᾶλλον ὑπέρ τόν ἵππῳ σοβαρῷ ἐφεζόμενον ἄνδρα καί γεωργόν γῆς αὔλακας τέμνοντα τῷ ἀρότρῳ, τό ζεῦγός τε ό τῶνβοῶν τῶν συνεργαζομένων πολύ κρεῖσσον νομίζοντα βασιλικοῦ τετρώρου, ὅθεν καί χαίρει ταῖς χρησταῖς κατεντρυφῶν ἐλπίσιν. Ὁ στρατιώτης πάλιν δέ ἑαυτόν ὑπέρ πάντας γεωργούς τε καί πλευστικούς καί χειροτέχνας μείζω ἡγεῖται καί ὡς ἔνδοξος ἐναβρύνεται τρέχων ἐπί σφαγήν καί θάνατον ἄωρον καταλύσαι. Οὗτος οὖν οὐκ ἀνέξεται κώπην ὅλως ἐλάσαι, οὐδέ κρατῆσαι δίκελλαν, οὐδέ τέκτων γενέσθαι, οὐ ναύτης οὐδέ γεωργός, οὐ γεηπόνος εἶναι αἱρήσεται˙ ἀλλ᾿ ἕκαστος, πρός ὅ, καθάπερ εἶπον, τό ἐνεργεῖν ἀπό Θεοῦ ἔλαβεν, ἐνεργήσει, (395) ἄλλως δέ οὐ δυνήσεται ἄνθρωπος ἐν τῷ βίῳ ὅλως τι διαπράξασθαι ἤ τήν ἀρχήν θελῆσαι. Ἰδού γάρ, αὖθις λέγω σοι ἅπερ καί πρῴην εἶπον˙ ὥσπερ οὐκ ἔξεστί ποτε τῶν εἰρημένων πάντων ἐργαλεῖον ἀφ᾿ ἑαυτόῦ κινηθῆναι πρός πρᾶξιν ἤ ἐνεργῆσαί τι ἄνευ χειρός ἀνθρώπου, τοῦ αἴροντος καί δι᾿ αὐτοῦ κατασκευάζοντός τι, οὕτως οὐδέ ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἄνευ χειρός τῆς θείας ἐννοῆσαί τι δύναται ἀγαθόν ἤ ποιῆσαι. Ἰδού γάρ, ὁ τεχνίτης με κατεσκεύασε Λόγος, οἷον αὐτός ἠθέλησε καί ἔθηκεν ἐν κόσμῳ. Πῶς οὖν, εἰπέ, δυνήσομαι φρονῆσαι ἤ ποιῆσαι ἤ ὅλως ἐνεργῆσαί τι θείας ἰσχύος ἄνευ; Ὁ νοῦν μοι χαρισάμενος, οἷον ἤθελε πάντως, αὐτός καί δίδωσι φρονεῖν ὅσα συμφέρειν οἶδε, καί ἐνεργεῖν παρέχει μοι δύναμιν, ἅπερ θέλει. Εἰ οὖν αὐτά ποιήσαιμι πλείονα πάντως δώσει, καί τελεώτερα φρονεῖν παράσχει φιαλνθρώπως˙ εἰ δέ καταφρονήσαιμι καί αὐτῶν τῶν ὀλίγων τῶν καταπιστευθέντων μοι, τήν στέρησιν δικαίως ὄντως καθυποστήσομαι παρά Θεοῦ τοῦ δόντος καί ἄπρακτος γενήσομαι, ἄχρηστον ἐργαλεῖον, ὡς μή θελήσας ἐντολάς ἐργάσαθαι τοῦ κτίστου, ἀλλ᾿ ὀκνηρίᾳ ἐμαυτόν ἐκδούς καί ῥαθυμίᾳ˙ καί διά τοῦτο ἔρρμμαι τῶν χειρῶν τοῦ ∆εσπότου, ἀπειθείᾳ τῇ πρός αὐτόν καί ἀνυποταξίᾳ
