to the God who is proclaimed, if "the man-made things of Egypt" have not been shaken, the demonic power concerning them having failed and the old superstition having been lifted from the soul of the Egyptians, and further to these, if civil war is not set up for the Egyptians in every city and in every house, with some accepting the Lord and the worship of the God of the prophets and turning away from the age-old polytheistic error, while others, because they still cling to their ancestral evils, wage war against those who have accepted the Lord, if even still to this day, trying to consult their own gods and their idols and "those who speak from the earth and the ventriloquists," they make their refuge in these things incomplete and ineffectual, because the demons are no longer able to work as they did before, if all these things are not shown to have reached their fulfillment by the deeds themselves, let it not yet be thought by me that the prophecy has been fulfilled, nor that the prophesied Lord has come to the life of men, 8.5.4 but if by the deeds themselves, much clearer than words, even to this day are seen the inhabitants of Egypt, some having known the God of the prophets and for his sake having abandoned their ancestral gods, while others are in a state of rebellion against them, and some still now calling upon "their gods and the idols and those who speak from the earth," who are able to do nothing, while others, having established an altar to the Lord of the prophets in every church throughout the whole land of Egypt, both in their afflictions and in the persecutions against them, no longer call upon beasts nor the creeping things of the earth as gods, nor wild beasts and irrational animals like their fathers, but upon the God over all, and having apprehended him alone and his fear in their minds, and making vows to him and no longer to demons, and rendering their godly promises, how does it not follow to confess that the things before the results have already come to pass? And these things were the coming of the Lord into Egypt, not to happen disembodied, but through a "light cloud" or rather "through a light thickness"; for so the Hebrew has it, hinting at his incarnate presence. 8.5.5 Therefore, the discourse, proceeding next, called this same one a man, a savior, saying: "and the Lord will send to them a man, who will save them." So again here the Hebrew has "and the Lord will send to them a savior, who will save them." Since these things provide such a clear proof, I think the times have also become clear, in which the Lord's coming to mankind was prophesied. 8.5.6 So much has been briefly compiled concerning the times of the Lord's appearance to men; but one might at leisure find more by going through the other scriptures; but we, being content with what has been said, will now proceed to the remaining prophecies. Therefore, we will select from the divine predictions the things dispensed among men in accordance with him. 9.Pin.t These things are in the ninth book of the evangelical demonstration concerning our Savior. 9.Pin.1 Concerning the things to be done at his incarnation; from the scriptures noted below: 1.
