they become and for this reason are called heavenly. (335) For who from the beginning was ever such a one, I tell you, of the sons of Adam, before the Lord of all things heavenly and earthly came down from heaven? This one took our flesh and has given the Divine Spirit, as we have often said, and as God He provides all this for us. What all? The things I have often told you, but I will also say them now. It becomes like a divine, most luminous pool, it embraces all the worthy whom it should find within, and how shall I speak, how shall I worthily express the things that happen? Give me a word, O my God, who has granted me a soul. The Divine Spirit, being God, whomsoever it might receive within itself, it completely refashions them, completely renews them, and makes them new in a paradoxical way. How and in what way does it not partake at all of their filth? Just as fire does not partake of the blackness of the iron, but imparts to it all its own qualities, (336) so also the Divine Spirit, being incorruptible, gives incorruptibility and, existing as immortal, it gives immortality, and being unsetting light, it makes all into light in whom it takes up its abode,
