When the rich, the proud, and those who raise their eyebrows come to a funeral procession, when they see the body lying deaf and motionless, and children in orphanhood, and a wife in widowhood, and friends in dejection, and servants in black, and the whole appearance of the house gloomy, 55.281 how they are humbled! how they are brought low! how they are contrite! For even though they have enjoyed countless teachings and gained nothing, from that sight they suddenly become philosophers, learning the insignificance and transience of human nature, and the rottenness and instability of their own power, and in the misfortunes of others they foresee their own changes. 2. For if, with death existing, there is so much plunder, so much greed, and just as fish do, the more powerful swallow the weaker; if there were no death, when would greed have ever ceased? For if, knowing that they will not enjoy what they have seized, but willingly or unwillingly will yield it to others, they are so mad and rage; if they held this in security, when would their wicked desire ever be extinguished? And what? Are not the crowns of martyrdom woven through death? And what of Paul? Did he not set up countless trophies, saying: I die daily, I protest by your boasting? For death is not evil, but an evil death is evil. For this reason it says: Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints. And elsewhere it says: The death of sinners is evil; meaning this is evil, to depart with an evil conscience, and weighed down and oppressed by many anxieties for sins. Whereas he who has a pure conscience runs to the prizes, he departs for the crown. And that you may learn that it is not the nature of things, but the opinion of men, that causes the disturbance, hear how Paul seeks after this, now saying: For we who are in this tabernacle groan, awaiting the adoption, the redemption of our body; and now declaring the same thing elsewhere: But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with you all. And you too, rejoice in the same way and share your joy with me. But if death is not burdensome, but even desirable for those who live rightly, much more so poverty and all other things. Sought out for all his desires. Another, Examined with care. Here he seems to me to be discoursing about the creations, proclaiming the wisdom of God; though above he spoke of works, if we too, on account of the fainthearted and those of other opinions, have touched on these things, the portents, the wonders, which he often performed managing the race of men. What then is, Sought out for all his desires? Examined with care, he says, as another interpreter also said, prepared, perfected, brought into being, fulfilled, sufficient to do his will, able to bear witness to his power, not limping, nor lacking what is needed to accomplish his commands, which he also says elsewhere: Fire, hail, snow, ice, stormy winds fulfilling his word; that is, his commands. Thus also the Prophet said: He made the moon for seasons, the sun knows its setting; you made darkness, and it became night. And not only do these accomplish that for which they were made; but even if he should command the opposite, here too there is great obedience. For example, he commanded the sea, and not only did it not drown them, which was its function, but having stilled its waves, it brought the Jewish people across more safely than a rock. The furnace not only did not burn, but also 55.282 provided a whistling dew. The beasts not only did not devour, but even held the place of bodyguards for Daniel. The sea monster not only did not swallow, but also kept the deposit safe. The earth not only did not bear, but also of the sea
