And to the wonderful patriarchs, to Abraham, and to Isaac, and to Jacob, and to the divine David, the God of all promised that he would raise up Christ from their seed according to the flesh, and would provide salvation through him to all people. He called the promise made to the fathers a covenant. For the other interpreters have called the covenant an agreement. But he has called Israel his race, because Christ is from the Jews according to the flesh, as the Apostle says. Therefore I have given you [he said] for a covenant of a race; that is, to fulfill the agreements made with the Jews; but for a light, no longer of the Jews, but of the nations. For these through faith partook of salvation; [confessing him and confessing God from God.] But those loved the darkness of unbelief. This also the blessed David said here: "He remembered his mercy to Jacob, and his truth to the house of Israel;" for he fulfilled the promises made to them. Yet all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. For the light of truth has risen not only for the Jews, but for all people. 4. "Shout to the Lord, all the earth, sing, and rejoice, and sing psalms." Therefore, since you have all been freed from the bitter tyranny of the devil, offer the hymn of victory to the God who saved you. For the shout is the voice of victors. Therefore we fulfill what was commanded. For we are accustomed to offer this hymn to God at the mys 80.1661 tical time, shouting and crying out, singing, and chanting psalms, and dancing with all joy. 5. "Sing psalms to the Lord with a harp, and with the voice of a psalm." And it is possible to see this law being perpetually fulfilled in the churches. For with the spiritual harp we strike up the divine melody. And we ourselves make our bodies rational harps, and use, instead of strings, the teeth, and instead of bronze, the lips, and the tongue, moving more sharply than any plectrum, produces the harmonious sound of the notes. And the mind moves the tongue, like some musician making its transition with knowledge; this harp is more pleasing to God than the soulless one. And he himself is a witness, crying out to the Jews through the prophet: "Take away from me the sound of your songs, and the voice of your instruments I will not hear." 6. "With hammered trumpets, and the sound of a horn trumpet." The divine Scripture often calls a shout a trumpet. Thus the Lord says in the Gospels: "When you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do;" instead of, Do not proclaim it, nor make it known to all; so that you may not destroy the fruit of charity with vainglory. Therefore here too it calls teaching a trumpet, through which we learn of the good deeds done for us, and are instructed in the beneficial laws. It calls the bronze ones hammered trumpets; and the horn ones, those made from horns. It was customary for the Jews to use these. But a shadow of our things was practiced among them. Therefore, just as they sacrificed the unreasoning lamb, but we the savior, [the God from God,] who takes away the sin of the world; so they used soulless trumpets, but we use ensouled and rational ones. Therefore our trumpets are the divine apostles, and the wonderful prophets, and those after them who have obtained the gift of teaching. "Shout before the Lord the king." Offer the victory hymn to the king and master of all. 7. "Let the sea be moved, and the fullness thereof, the world, and all who dwell in it." But Symmachus thus: Let the sea sound with its fullness; the world, and those who dwell in it. And it is possible to see the fulfillment of the prophecy especially in the populous cities. For the multitude of the pious peoples in the churches imitates a waving sea. Such also is the sound of those singing psalms. But according to the 80.1664 Seventy, the prophetic word of those inhabiting the sea and the land the
