want to marry, incurring judgment because they have violated their first pledge.” For those who have made a promise and set it aside have judgment, but those who have not made a promise but were joined through weakness will not have judgment. But if they were going to have judgment, how did he say, “Let them marry, let them manage their households?” 10. Therefore, everyone who prophesies is found to be consistent, whether in the Old Testament or in the New, as holy John also said in the Apocalypse, “These things the Lord revealed to his servants through his servant John” and “Thus says the Lord.” The one who says these things had a sound mind and was consistent; behold, then, * “Thus says the Lord” and “The vision which he saw.” But this Montanus, who boasts that he is a prophet and who has deceived those deceived by him, recounts things inconsistent with the divine scripture. For he says in his so-called prophecy, “What do you say of the one saved beyond human measure? For the righteous one, he says, will shine a hundredfold more than the sun, and the little ones among you who are saved will shine a hundredfold more than the 2.233 moon.” But the Lord refutes such a one, he who has the authority to grant that the faces of the saints shine, and who brightened the face of Moses and transforms his saints in the future resurrection of their bodies, those who are sown in dishonor and raised in glory, not other bodies than the existing ones, but the existing ones themselves raised whole, receiving glory from him after the resurrection from him who abundantly provides glory to his own saints, since he has the authority to give and to grant as God and Lord. But having the authority to grant this, he did not promise according to Montanus, but says, “Your faces will shine like the sun.” If, therefore, the one who has authority and is truly our master and Lord, Jesus Christ, says that the faces of the righteous will shine like the sun, how does Montanus promise a hundredfold more? Unless perhaps he is like that one who promised those around Adam, saying that “You will be like gods,” and prepared for them to be expelled from their existing glory and the delight of paradise and to be brought down into the corruption of death. 11. Moreover, the same Montanus adds, saying thus, “I am the Lord God Almighty, dwelling in a man.” Therefore, indeed, the divine scripture and the consistency of the teaching of the Holy Spirit secure us well, admonishing us so that we may know what are the imitations of the alien spirit and the things opposed to the 2.234 truth. For when Montanus said this straightway, he gave us occasion to be reminded of the things spoken by the Lord. For thus the Lord says in the gospel, “I have come in my Father's name, and you did not receive me. Another will come in his own name, and you will receive such a one.” Therefore, such a one was found to be entirely out of harmony with the divine scriptures, as would be clear to anyone who reads with understanding. If, therefore, he is out of harmony, he is alien to the holy catholic church, he and the heresy according to him which boasts of having prophets and spiritual gifts, which it has not received, but from which it has departed. Who then, being consistent, would dare to call these men prophets and not rather say that such men are deceivers? For Christ taught us, saying that “I am sending you the Paraclete Spirit” and, giving the signs, he said that “He will glorify me,” as it is possible to see the truth that the holy apostles, having received the Paraclete Spirit, glorified the Lord, but this Montanus glorifies himself; the Lord glorified his Father and the Lord again, Christ, glorified the Spirit, calling it the Spirit of truth, but Montanus glorifies only himself and says he is the Father Almighty and
