which I also wish to keep forever, and I swear by God and all His saints, since with these as witnesses the agreements are both written and spoken, a faithful man of your empire and of your most desired son and emperor, the lord John Porphyrogenitus. And I will arm my right hand against everyone who resists your power, whether he who raises his hands is of the Christian race or is a foreigner to our court, whom we call pagans; so that, as was contained in the aforementioned agreement and pleased both parties, both your majesties and me, with the others having been annulled, this alone I draw from there and affirm and hold fast to: to be a servant of the empire and of both, and a liege man, as if renewing what was dissolved. And not even if something should happen, will I come to the annulment of this; nor will there be any cause or means, manifest or hidden, by which I shall appear a transgressor of the treaties and of the things now agreed upon. 13.12.3 But since I now receive the land to be explicitly declared herein in the parts of the east by a chrysobull of your majesty, in which your authority is also signified by a red-ink signature, which chrysobull, having also been made reciprocal, was delivered to me, I receive the given lands as having been gifted from your majesties and having the power of the gift from the chrysobull document, as a return gift for so many lands and cities I give my own faith to your majesties, both of you, the great emperor lord Alexios Komnenos, and of your thrice-desired son the emperor lord John Porphyrogenitus, which I promise to keep immovable and unshaken like a safe anchor. 13.12.4 And so that I may repeat the statement more clearly and preserve the peculiarity of those agreeing in writing, behold I, Bohemond son of Robert Guiscard, agree with your majesties, and I establish the unbreakable agreement to be kept towards your majesties, that is, both you, the emperor of the Romans lord Alexios, and the emperor and your son, the Porphyrogenitus, and a liege man unadulterated and unfeigned, as long as I breathe and am counted among the living. And I would arm my hand against your enemies appearing from hence and of your empire of the ever-august august emperors of the Roman hegemony. 13.12.5 And wherever I might be commanded by you, with all the army around me I will serve without excuse according to the present need. And if there might be any who are hostile to your power, unless perhaps they are equal to the immortal angels and are invulnerable to our spears or are clothed in some adamantine bodies, against all these I would fight on behalf of your majesties. And if I am sound of body and free from any barbarian and Turkish war, I myself in my own body will fight the war on your behalf with the accompanying army. But if I am shackled by a severe illness, as many human things are, or an impending war draws me to itself, then indeed then I promise to send out possible aid through my noble men around me, so that they may make up for my deficiency. For the true faith, which today I give to your majesties, is this: to preserve the terms of the agreement unmutilated, whether through myself or through others, as has been said. 13.12.6 And I swear to keep true faith both in general and in particular for your power and for your life, this one, I mean, the below and earthly one. For on behalf of such a life of yours I would become some iron statue, hammer-wrought with my arms. But even up to the honor of the
