your [majesty], and I extend the oath even to your royal members, if any harm is plotted against them by any villainous enemies, whom it is possible for me to destroy and to prevent from the evil undertaking. But also for all your land and city, both small and great, and islands themselves, and in short, whatever land and sea there is under your scepters, from the Adriatic Sea itself and as far as the entire east and along the length of great Asia, where the boundaries of the Romans were. 13.12.7 Furthermore I agree, and God will be witness and hearer of the things agreed upon, never to hold or possess any land placed under your scepters, whether now or formerly, nor city nor island, and simply, whatever the empire of Constantinople contained or now holds in both the east and west, except for those things expressly granted to me by your God-appointed rule, which will also be declared by name in the present document. 13.12.8 But whatever land I might be able to subdue that was once subject to this empire, having driven out those holding that land, I must refer the administration concerning it to your judgment. And if you wish me to govern the conquered land as your liege man and faithful servant, this will be so; but if not, then I would hand it over to whatever man your majesty might wish, not hesitating in any way at all. And I will not accept a land betrayed to me by another, or any city or town, which were once under the authority of the empire, as belonging to me; but both those taken by siege and those without a siege, were yours and will be yours again, with me making no claim whatsoever concerning them. 13.12.9 But neither will I accept an oath from any Christian nor give one to another, nor any agreement whatsoever tending to your harm or to the detriment both of you and of your empire. Nor will I become the man of another or of another authority, greater or lesser, without [the consent of] your majesty; but there is one lordship for me, which I promise to serve, the empire of you and of your thrice-desired son. 13.12.10 And the men of your empire who come to me as having rebelled against your rule and wishing to serve me, I will both hate and send away, or rather, I will arm myself against them. But other barbarians who nevertheless wish to come under my spear, I would accept, but not in my own person; but I will put them under oath for the sake of you and of your much-desired son, and I will take over their lands by right of your empire, and from then on I promise to do what is commanded concerning them without excuse. 13.12.11 These things, on the one hand, are about the cities and lands which were under the scepter of the Fortune of the Romans; but concerning those that have not yet been enslaved to Romania, I promise these things under oath, so that the lands that come to me without war or even with war and battle, all these I may consider as from your empire, whether they are Turkish or Armenian and, as one who knows our language might say, pagan or Christian, and those from the nations approaching me and wishing to serve me, so that I may receive them as being themselves also future men of your empire. And may my agreement with the majesty of the empire and the established oaths extend also to these. And of these themselves, those whom you, the ever-venerable emperors, wish to be placed under me, they would be so placed, but those whom you wish to send to your majesty, I will send, if they also wish it, but if they do not wish it, but refuse service to you, I will not receive them either. 13.12.12 However, against Tancred and my nephew I will have an undeclared war, if
