he will not be willing to yield anything of his hostility towards your empire nor will he release from his hand the cities of your empire. And when, whether he is willing or not, the cities are rescued, I myself, so that I may rule with the support of your majesty the things granted to me by chrysobull, which will also be expressly enumerated. But those cities, along with Laodicea in Syria, and as many as are outside of those granted to me, shall be attached to your scepter. But neither will I ever receive the fugitives of your empire, but I will make them turn back and I will compel them to return to your empire. 13.12.13 Furthermore, I promise also these things in addition to what has been said above, making the agreements more secure. For I agree that I should provide as guarantors for these agreements, so that they may remain inviolable and unbreakable in perpetuity, my men who are to hold by my right the land given to me by your empire and the cities and the towns, which also will be set forth by name. For I will prepare these men too to swear the most dreadful oaths, so that they too may keep true faith towards your majesty and as much as the custom of the Romans ordains, and that they may most scrupulously cherish all that is written in the present agreement. And I will put these men under oath by the heavenly powers and the implacable wrath of God, that if ever I should plot against your empire—which may it not be, O savior, O justice of God—they shall strive in every way, first, within a period of forty days, to bring me back to faith with your empire, should I have become completely stiff-necked. And this would happen, if indeed it were allowed to happen, with outright madness and rage seizing me, or when, clearly, I am driven out of my mind. But if I am foolish and unyielding to their advice and the things of rage furiously assault my soul, then at least they shall indeed renounce me and in every way disown me, and they shall transfer to your majesty both hand and mind, and the lands which they hold by my right, tearing them away from my authority, they shall hand over to you and to your party. 13.12.14 And they will be compelled to do these things under oath and they will keep the same faith and servitude and goodwill towards you, which I too have agreed upon, and for your life and your earthly honor they will take up arms, but also for your imperial parts and limbs, so that they might not suffer anything from any enemy, they will not cease from warring, if at least they should in the meantime become aware of plotters and dangerous men. I swear to these things and call to witness both God and men and the highest angels, that I will indeed compel them, having bound them by dreadful oaths, to do and perform to the best of their ability. And so also for your castles and cities and lands, and simply for all the parts under your empire, all that the west holds, all that the east contains, they will agree under oath to the same things that I too have agreed to with you. And they will do these things both while I am living and after I have died; and your majesty will also have these men as subjects and will use them as faithful servants. 13.12.15 And as many as happen to be sojourning here with me, will immediately give both sworn pledges and agreements to you, the Augusti, both the lord Alexios and emperor of the Romans and the porphyrogennitos emperor and your son; but as many of my horsemen and hoplites who are absent, whom we usually call *caballarii*, when your empire has sent a man to the city of Antioch, there they too will complete the same oaths, with the man of your empire administering the oath to them, and with me—I swear this—preparing the men to swear and to agree to the same and identical things. In addition I also agree and
