on the fourteenth of the month.” But others of them, celebrating the same one day and fasting the same one day and performing the mysteries, boast to have found the precise date supposedly from the Acts of Pilate, in which it is stated that the Savior suffered on the eighth day before the Kalends of April. And on that day they wish to celebrate the Pascha on whatever day the fourteenth of the moon might fall; but those in Cappadocia celebrate the same one day, the eighth day before the Kalends of April. And among them there is no small dissension, some saying on the fourteenth of the moon, and others on the eighth day before the Kalends of April. Furthermore, we have found copies of the Acts of Pilate, in which it indicates that the passion took place on the fifteenth day before the Kalends of April; but the truth, as we have learned with great accuracy, we have understood that the Savior suffered on the thirteenth day before the Kalends of April; but some say on the tenth day before the Kalends of April. And these too have strayed from the subject. But I fear to prolong the account about these matters at great length; for we have much to say. 2. For the lawgiver Moses, having fulfilled the entire law, having received the command from God, in the last book, that is Deuteronomy, places all the curses, not only concerning Passovers but also concerning circumcision and concerning tithing and offerings; so that if they have escaped one curse, they have sown for themselves many; for they will be found accursed for not being circumcised, accursed for not tithing, and they become accursed for not bringing offerings to Jerusalem. And oh, the men who involve themselves in so many triflings; for it is truly possible to say that wise saying of Ecclesiastes, which was set forth to us from the Holy Spirit, that "this Ecclesiastes knew, that God made man upright, but they have sought for themselves many ways." For in what way does their reasoning not fail? For first, if they celebrate the Pascha on the fourteenth, they have need to take the lamb on the tenth and to keep it until the fourteenth, and no longer will there be one day of fasting but five, both the tenth and eleventh and twelfth and thirteenth and fourteenth; but if the Pascha is sacrificed toward evening, the same dawning fourteenth completes six days in the fast, and no longer will it be one day of fasting and their quest for one day has failed, it not being one. For the prototypes are linked together and they have lost no small matter concerning God. For Christ had to be sacrificed on the fourteenth day according to the law, so that the light that illumined them according to the law might cease among them, when the sun rose and covered the brightness of the moon. For from the fourteenth and onward the appearance of the moon wanes; so also in the law, from the coming and passion of Christ, the Jewish synagogue was darkened, but the gospel shone forth, the law not having been destroyed but fulfilled, the type not having been abolished but having presented the truth. For so also when they had made the Passover in Jericho, the divine scripture immediately added, saying, "And the sons of Israel made the Passover and ate in Gilgal, and the manna ceased," the divine scripture testifying to them and prophesying that at the passion of the Lord, because of their denial of God, the angelic and heavenly food would cease among them, which is called manna among them. 3. But from all sides the holy church of God, concerning this necessity of the mystagogy, collecting the connection, does not fall away from the truth. For it makes use not only of the fourteenth, but also of the week which periodically revolves in the order of the seven days of the sabbath, so that according to the things done by the Lord, as

Πανταχόθεν δὲ ἡ ἁγία τοῦ θεοῦ ἐκκλησία περὶ τῆς χρείας ταύτης τῆς μυσταγωγίας συλλέγουσα τὸν σύνδεσμον οὐ διαπίπτει τῆς ἀληθείας. κέχρηται γὰρ οὐ μόνον τῇ τεσσαρεσκαιδεκάτῃ, ἀλλὰ καὶ τῇ ἑβδομάδι τῇ κατὰ περίοδον ἀνακυκλουμένῃ ἐν τῇ τάξει τῶν τοῦ σαββάτου ἑπτὰ ἡμερῶν, ἵνα κατὰ τὰ ὑπὸ τοῦ κυρίου γενόμενα ὡς
