he will perform all things in an archiepiscopal manner, both in ordinations and in the other ecclesiastical affairs according to the privileges of this throne. 13.12.21 There were, it seems, also the portions cut off from the ducal authority of the city of Antioch by your majesty, as you wished to appropriate these entirely. These are: the theme of Podandon and in addition to this the strategaton of the city of Tarsus, and the city of Adana, and the hearths of Mopsus, and Anabarza, and, to put it briefly, the whole land of Cilicia, as much as the Cydnus and the Hermon bound; and so also the strategis of Laodicea in Syria and indeed the strategaton of Gabala, which we also call Zebel, using a semi-barbaric term, and the strategata of Balanea and Marakea, and Antaradus with Antartus; for both are strategides. These are what your majesty cut off from the whole ducal authority of Antioch and, having taken them from there, assigned to the domain of the empire. 13.12.22 And I am content both with what has been given and likewise with what has been taken away. And I will hold to the rights and privileges which I received from you, but I would not lay claim to those which I did not receive. Nor would I overstep the boundaries, but I will abide by what has been granted, holding and enjoying them, as long as I live, as has been previously declared. But after my death, as this has also been written before, they will revert to their own authorities and to where they were given from into my power. For I will enjoin my agents and men in my last will to return all the said lands to the scepter of the Roman empire without making any trouble about the restitution or falling into any dispute. 13.12.23 And I swear this also and confirm this 13.12.23 agreement that they will do what is commanded without delay and without doubt. Moreover, let this also be added to the agreements, that since, concerning the things taken away by your dominion from the authority of Antioch and the duchy of the city, I implored your throne to make compensation and the pilgrims also implored your majesty, and your dominion consented to compensate me with certain themes and lands and cities situated in the east. 13.12.24 It is necessary to mention these here by name, so that neither your majesty may be in any doubt about anything and I may have that for which I might seek. And these were: the theme of the whole land of Kasiotis, whose metropolis is Beroea, which is called Chalep in the language of the barbarians, the theme of Lapara and all the towns under it, that is, Plasta, the castle of Chonios, Rhomaina, the castle Aramisos, the small town of Ameras, the castle of Sarbanos, the fortress of Telchamson along with the three Tilia, both Sthlabotilin and the other two, the fortress of Sgenin, the castle of Kaltzierin; and indeed also these towns, both Kommermoeri and what is called Kathismatin and Sarsapin and the small town of Mekran. These are the ones situated on this side of Syria; but the themes from Mesopotamia, situated somewhere near the city of Edessa, are both the theme of Limnia and the theme of Aetos with the entire territory of each of these. 13.12.25 Nor let these matters concerning Edessa lie unmentioned, nor the annual talents assigned to me by your God-guarded dominion, I mean, the two hundred litrai of the Michaelatus coinage. Ἦσαν δὲ ταῦτα· τό τε θέμα τῆς Κασιώτιδος πάσης χώρας, ἦς μητρόπολίς ἐστιν ἡ Βέρροια, ὃ κατὰ τὴν τῶν βαρβάρων φωνὴν Χάλεπ λέγεται, τὸ θέμα τῆς Λαπάρας καὶ τὰ ὑπὸ ταύτην πάντα πολίχνια, τοῦτ' ἔστι τὰ Πλαστά, τὸ τοῦ Χωνίου κάστρον, τὰ Ῥωμαΐνα, τὸ κάστρον Ἀραμισός, τὸ τοῦ Ἀμηρᾶ πολίχνιον, τὸ κάστρον τοῦ Σαρβάνου, τὸ τοῦ Τελχαμψὼν φρούριον σὺν οἷς καὶ τὰ τρία Τίλια, τό τε Σθλαβοτίλιν καὶ τἆλλα δύο, τὸ φρούριον τὸ Σγένιν, τὸ κάστρον τὸ Καλτζιέριν· καὶ δὴ καὶ ταυτὶ τὰ πολίχνια, τό τε Κομμερμοέρι καὶ τὸ Καθισμάτιν λεγόμενον καὶ τὸ Σαρ σάπιν καὶ τὸ Μέκραν τὸ πολισμάτιον. Ταῦτα μὲν τὰ ἐπὶ τάδε Συρίας κείμενα· τὰ δὲ ἀπὸ τῆς μέσης τῶν ποταμῶν θέματα, τὰ ἀγχοῦ που κείμενα τῆς πόλεως Ἐδέσης, τό τε θέμα τῶν Λιμνίων καὶ τὸ θέμα τοῦ Ἀετοῦ μετὰ πάσης τῆς ἑκάστου τούτων περιοχῆς. 13.12.25 Μηδὲ ταῦτα ἀμνημόνευτα κείσθω τὰ περὶ τῆς Ἐδέσης μηδὲ τὰ παρὰ τοῦ θεοφρουρή του κράτους ὑμῶν τετυπωμένα μοι ἐτήσια τάλαντα, λέγω δὴ τὰς διακοσίας λίτρας τῆς Μιχαηλάτου χαραγῆς.
