The resurrection and feasting might be according to the prototype. And it has made use not only of the fourteenth day of the moon, but also of the course of the sun, so that we might not, by celebrating two Paschas in one year, celebrate not even one Pascha in the other. For this reason we observe the fourteenth day, but we pass over the equinox and bring the end of the completion to the holy Lord's day; and we take the lamb from the tenth day, recognizing the name of Jesus through the iota, so that nothing may escape us regarding the whole truth of this life-giving Pascha * of the ecclesiastical and true dispensation. But I will also pass over this puffing of the palm-branch, or rather of the puffing serpent, having sealed myself by the power of Christ and directing my mind to what follows, as is customary calling upon God for help. Against the heresy of those not accepting the Gospel according to John and his Apocalypse ˉλˉα, but of the sequence ˉνˉα. 1. In sequence after these heresies, after that of the Phrygians and Quintillians and the so-called Quartodecimans, another heresy sprang up in life, like a weak reptile, unable 2.249 to withstand the scent of dittany or storax or frankincense or wormwood or the smell of asphalt or incense or the gagates stone or the horn of a deer. For those who have experience of these things say that these types are repellents for venomous reptiles; and some call dittany "birth-herb" from the fact that the physicians' assistants use it to help women giving birth. so that from us it is reasonably compared to the God Logos who came from above, from the heavenly realms, begotten from the Father timelessly and without beginning. For Solomon says concerning the foolish and wicked woman that "she hates a word of security"; so also these have hated the solid things of the proclamation, being earthly and hostile toward heavenly things. Whence, fearing the voice of the Holy Spirit which says "the voice of the Lord preparing the deer," * of the one who said to his own servants and apostles, "Behold, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions and on all the power of the enemy." For this was the voice preparing the deer, the one given into the world through the holy apostles and evangelists to trample down the opposition of the devil; from whose number the holy John stood forth preeminently and refuted the power of those who were deceived and serpent-like. 2. But such as these will not be strong in the ark. For holy Noah is permitted according to the word of the Lord to secure such a thing, as it says to him, "You will pitch it inside and outside," so that he might show the form of the holy church of God, which has the power of pitch, which drives away the dreadful and destructive reptilian teachings; for where asphalt is burned as incense, a snake cannot stand. Therefore the holy incense of the storax has stupefied them, and they refuse 2.250 its fragrance and * the power of the wormwood or frankincense, having sprung up against the serpent itself and having sprouted over its den. For where Ebion and Cerinthus and those with them proclaimed Christ to be a mere man from intercourse, I mean in Asia, there the Holy Spirit made this holy herb or shrub rise up for the world, the one that drove away the serpent and destroyed the tyranny of the devil. For there the holy John, after a ripe old age, is permitted by the Holy Spirit to preach and to bring back those who have been led astray on the way; not by necessity, but by choice

Ἀλλὰ οὐκ ἰσχύσουσιν ἐν τῇ κιβωτῷ οἱ τοιοῦτοι. ἐπιτρέπεται γὰρ ὁ ἅγιος Νῶε κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα κυρίου ἐπασφαλίσασθαι τὴν τοιαύτην, ὥς φησι πρὸς αὐτόν «ἀσφαλτώσεις αὐτὴν ἔσωθεν καὶ ἔξωθεν», ἵνα δείξῃ τὸ εἶδος τῆς ἁγίας τοῦ θεοῦ ἐκκλησίας, ἐχούσης τῆς ἀσφάλτου τὴν δύναμιν, τὴν ἀποδιώκουσαν τὰ δεινὰ καὶ ὀλετήρια ἑρπετώδη διδάγματα· ὅπου γὰρ θυμιᾶται ἡ ἄσφαλτος, οὐκ ἰσχύει στῆναι ὄφις. ἐκάρωσε τοίνυν αὐτοὺς τὸ ἅγιον θυμίαμα τοῦ στύρακος καὶ παραι2.250 τοῦνται τούτου τὴν εὐωδίαν καὶ * τῆς ἀβροτόνου εἴτ' οὖν λιβανωτίδος ἡ δύναμις, κατ' αὐτοῦ τοῦ ὄφεως ἐπιφύσασα καὶ ἐπάνω τοῦ φωλεοῦ αὐτοῦ ἐκβλαστήσασα. ἔνθα γὰρ τὸν Χριστὸν ἐκ παρατριβῆς ψιλὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐκήρυττεν ὁ Ἐβίων καὶ ὁ Κήρινθος καὶ οἱ ἀμφ' αὐτούς, φημὶ δὲ ἐν τῇ Ἀσίᾳ, ἐκεῖ τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον ἀνέτειλε τῷ κόσμῳ ταύτην τὴν ἁγίαν βοτάνην εἴτ' οὖν θάμνον, τὴν ἀποδιώξασαν τὸν ὄφιν καὶ λύσασαν τὴν τοῦ διαβόλου τυραννίδα. ἐκεῖ γὰρ ὁ ἅγιος Ἰωάννης μεθ' ἡλικίαν γηραλέαν ἐπιτρέπεται ὑπὸ τοῦ πνεύματος τοῦ ἁγίου κηρῦξαι καὶ ἀνακάμψαι τοὺς ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ πεπλανημένους· οὐ μετὰ ἀνάγκης, ἀλλὰ μετὰ προαιρέσεως
