revealing to those who obey the light of God in the holy teaching of God. But how long shall I prolong the discourse? For indeed where southernwood grows, there a snake no longer remains nor makes its den, and where there is the true teaching of God, a dwelling-place of serpentine teaching will not prevail, but will be utterly destroyed. 3. Therefore the Alogi say—for I give them this name; for from this point forward they will be so called, and so, beloved, let us give them the name, that is, of Alogi. For they held the heresy * called, which rejects the books of John. Since, therefore, they do not accept the Logos proclaimed by John, they will be called Alogi. Being, therefore, entirely alien to the proclamation of the truth, they deny the purity of the proclamation and accept neither the Gospel of John nor his Apocalypse. And if they accepted the Gospel but rejected the Apocalypse, we would have said that perhaps they do this out of scrupulosity, not accepting an apocryphal book on account of the things said deeply2.251 and obscurely in the Apocalypse. But since they by nature do not accept the books proclaimed by the holy John, it should be clear to everyone that these are they and those like them, about whom the holy John said in his catholic epistles that “it is the last hour, and you have heard that the Antichrist is coming; and now behold, there are many Antichrists” and what follows. For these men make excuses, being ashamed to speak against the holy John because they know he is one of the number of the apostles and was beloved by the Lord, to whom he worthily revealed the mysteries and who reclined upon his breast, and they try to subvert them in another way. For they say they are not John’s but Cerinthus’s, and they say they are not worthy to be in the church. 4. And from this very attempt they are immediately refuted, “understanding neither what they say nor the things about which they make confident assertions.” For how can things that speak against Cerinthus be by Cerinthus? For Cerinthus says Christ was a recent and mere man, but John proclaimed him as the eternally existing Logos, who came from above and was made flesh. Therefore, from this very opening their vain slander has been refuted as being foolish and not understanding from where it is refuted. For they themselves seem to believe the same things as we, but not holding to the sure things of the proclamation divinely dispensed to us through the holy John, they will be found refuted in what they do not know, how they raise their voice against the truth. And if they are willing to become sober and understand, they will know; for we do not reject the teachings from the Holy Spirit, which are held worthily and securely. For they declare against themselves—for I would not say against the truth—that his books do not harmo2.252nize with the other apostles. And so they seem to attack the holy and divinely inspired teaching. And what, he says, did he say? That “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,” and that “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only-begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth,” and immediately, “John bears witness and cried out, saying that this is he of whom I told you,” and that “this is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world”; and in order he says, “and those who heard said to him, Rabbi, where are you staying?”. At the same time, “on the next day,” he says, “he wanted to go into Galilee and he finds Philip, and Jesus says to him, Follow me”; and after this, a little before, he says, “and after three days a wedding took place in Cana of Galilee, and Jesus and his disciples were called to the wedding feast, and his mother was there.” But the other evangelists say that he spent forty days in the desert, being tempted by the devil, and then having returned, took his disciples. and
