to build, another to farm, and others likewise have many gnomic wills. A gnomic will is an incitement according to pleasure; a certain and various motion and appetite. For the one is characterized by absolute simplicity, simply creating and preserving an equality among all things of the same kind; while the other fashions and forms various things, making and constituting a disposition incompatible with what happens according to substance, either according to reason or contrary to reason, which is known in the intensification and remission of the good and of that which is not such. Will is of the intellectual soul, the reason which is in our power; as a self-determining power of itself. Will, willing and willed. will is the intellectual appetite of an intellectual substance. willing is that which has the will. willed is that which is loved. Will is an impulse and motion towards what is desired; or the ever-moving reason in us; or the reason turning about in the heart, able to be manifested only through activity. Will is the desire of an intellectual and rational substance towards what is according to its mind; for it is manifest that every intellectual being is also a willing one. for will is like a breath and life, existing essentially in every rational nature. will is so called from *theein* (to run) exceedingly along with nature towards what is willed by it; or the taking or grasping of what is willed. Will is considered in three ways: divine, angelic and psychic. Hence are refuted as speaking idly the heretics who say the flesh of the Lord is without mind and without soul. For His will according to man is of the soul; for these theta.1035 three natures alone are willing. Again, we find will spoken of in three ways in Scripture: divine, natural or intermediate, and third, carnal; which signifies diabolical. Themiton. just. fitting. Themethlon. the foundation.
