of sinners indeed, but who long for you exceedingly. 391 {1To the Abbot}1 Since I learned that you were brought in and beaten for Christ's sake, O thrice-desired one, I rejoice and rejoice with you; for this is joy and exultation, not according to the joy of the world (for this is joyless, seeming to be so but not being so, since flowing it does not stand still and in its end it produces death), but that according to God; for this alone is gladness and is constant, whose end is eternal life. Rightly therefore I rejoice and rejoice with you, most honored father. But that, as they say, the lash was a hundredfold and indeed grievous, behold, again an increase of gladness; I did not bear the report without feeling, even while absent. But nevertheless, glory to God who glorified you in being scourged on your back by the impious; your glory is unquenchable, your suffering is sacred, a support for fellow-confessors, an eagerness for the orthodox, a tearing apart of the heretics, an edification of the church of God. Holy stones are rolled upon the earth, as the prophet says; what is this? For the making smooth of the way of piety, for the building of the church. You yourself are therefore one of all these, being fitted and joined together by the Holy Spirit to the cornerstone. But remember us sinners also, most holy one, in your prayers that we may not fall away from the building, but may be found here somewhere even as a small stone by the grace and loving-kindness of our good God. 392 {1Theodore to the brotherhoods scattered everywhere, together with those who contend in the confession of Christ, greetings}1 Count it all joy, my brothers, in the present afflictions, since it is for Christ's sake, both the persecution of the persecuted and the imprisonment of the imprisoned, and I might add also the scourgings of the scourged. Therefore I will not cease to address, to exhort, to remind, both all in common and each one individually, although I know that you are established in the faith and have from your own selves the power to exhort and to admonish. But nevertheless, I the sinner am a debtor to add what is from myself, especially since my longing compels me; for I am zealous for you with a godly zeal, I the unadorned am adorned with your virtues as confessors. you are my joy and crown, a support and an unconquerable strength. Yes, I ask and exhort you all to remain unshaken in all cheerfulness and readiness; always, says the divine apostle, rejoice, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks. And are not these things a joy and an exultation, that, if we suffer with him, we shall also be glorified with him, if we die, we shall also live with him, if we endure, we shall also reign with him, as it is written? How great is the promise, beloved! If we are thrown into the fire, let us bear it, if we are given to the beasts, let us endure. For thus did the prize-winners from of old bear it, men and women, looking ahead to the things yonder and lightening the present pain with their hopes and considering painful things a delight and desiring the addition of sufferings, not abhorring them, just like those who snatch the greater part of the money from their partners, as you yourselves know, having tasted of the immortal sweetness from yourselves. O deceptive world! For your seeming pleasure is bitter and your every delight and exultation is deadly; and O longing for Christ! for you are the blessing and the joy and the mastery, even over those who possess you. See with what great words I, the lowly one, exhort you, not at all praiseworthy, but because they are friendly. As many as consider the visitation of the Lord to be slowness, let them consider this, that the goodness of God leads the persecutors to repentance, but the sufferers to testing, and let them not be disheartened nor scrutinize the judgments of the Lord. It is not for well-disposed servants to say, "4How long?"5; the renowned Job did not say this, nor Peter nor Paul, those of countless contests, nor any of the martyrs. The sleepless eye knows what is sufficient for both. Do you not have mercy, that you are storing up for yourself wrath on the day of wrath and revelation and righteous judgment of God. such a one, for whom there is no end of punishment nor
