of him in judgment; that is, he will obtain advocacy, he will obtain a defense, there will be no condemnation for him then, since almsgiving prepares his defense well. But another interpreter says, Managing his affairs with judgment. That is, he will enjoy much prosperity, he will not suffer any misfortunes, since he has become an excellent steward. Whereas the one who is cruel and inhuman, and does not show mercy, is exceedingly improvident. For what could be more grievous than this, than when one who is about to risk his soul is sparing of his money, and neglects his soul? For this very reason Christ praised that steward who, when he was about to be in danger, cancelled the bills and forgave the debts. For how is it not absurd that when we are in danger in the present life we give up all our possessions in order to buy our way out of the danger, but when we are about to be handed over to a perilous punishment, we do not make use of such stewardship? For this reason indeed he calls the merciful man a prudent steward, who buys much for little, purchasing heaven for money, the kingdom for a garment, the good things to come for bread and a cup of cold water. For what could be equal to this stewardship, when one, by giving things that are perishing 55.296 and flowing away and corruptible, receives these things that are to come and are immovable, and through those things also enjoys security in the present life? For this reason he says, He will manage his words in judgment. Or, as another says, Managing his affairs with judgment. In what judgment, if not on the day to come? Or that he will arrange all his affairs well, and nothing in them will be confused, but all things will be set in order, all proceeding with sequence and method, nothing disordered or tumultuous in them, since almsgiving makes everything easy for him. Making this clearer, another interpreter said, Managing his affairs with judgment. For this man is merciful, the one who manages his own affairs with judgment; whereas the other, being fruitless, is improvident. For he will not be shaken forever. What is equal to this stewardship, when he finds such a way that delivers him from unexpected circumstances, and makes him anchor outside the billows of life, and, being a man, he endures nothing human, or endures it, but is not overthrown? For this is the wonderful thing, that in the assault of temptations he is not bent, nor tripped up. What then? Have not many of the merciful been shaken? By no means. For even if they became poor, and were brought to extreme destitution, and fell into misfortunes, yet still they were not overthrown, considering the things they had wrought, and the goodwill of God, and drawing upon help from above, and having a certain strong and safe anchor, I mean, a good conscience. For this very reason he did not say, that they will not be plotted against, but that they will not be shaken. This indeed Christ also said of that man, who built his house upon the rock, not that he will not endure a storm, but that even while enduring a storm he will not be overthrown. For this is the wonderful thing, that his safety is not in an absence of temptations, but that even in the density of machinations he remains ever un-overthrown. For it is impossible for a soul rich in almsgiving ever to be overwhelmed by the unpleasantness of sufferings. The righteous will be in everlasting remembrance. See him not in the time of his life, but even after his death teaching many and instructing them. How then will this man suffer anything evil while he lives, when even in death he becomes a teacher of cheerfulness to others? For so that even the most unbelieving may learn that his fruit remains immortal in the heavens, He gives the proof here; for even when his body has been buried, and given over to the earth, his memory is carried everywhere. Such is the power of virtue; it does not yield to time, it is not withered by the multitude of days. And this happens for the salvation of the wicked.

Ἕτερος δὲ ἑρμηνευτής φησιν, Οἰκονομῶν τὰ πράγματα αὐτοῦ μετὰ κρίσεως. Τουτέστι, πολλῆς ἀπολαύσεται εὐημερίας, οὐχ ὑποστήσεταί τι τῶν ἀτόπων, ἅτε ἄριστος οἰκονόμος γενόμενος. Ὡς ὅ γε ὠμὸς καὶ ἀπάνθρωπος, καὶ μὴ ἐλεῶν, σφόδρα ἀνοικονόμητος. Τί γὰρ ἂν γένοιτο τούτου χαλεπώτερον, ἢ ὅταν περὶ ψυχῆς κινδυνεύειν μέλλων χρημάτων φείδηται, κἀκείνης ἀμελῇ; ∆ιά τοι τοῦτο καὶ ἐκεῖνον τὸν οἰκονόμον ὁ Χριστὸς ἐπῄνεσε τὸν ἡνίκα ἔμελλε κινδυνεύειν τὰ γραμματεῖα διαλύσαντα, καὶ χρεωκοπίαν ἐργασάμενον. Πῶς γὰρ οὐκ ἄτοπον ἐν μὲν τῷ παρόντι κινδυνεύοντας βίῳ πάντα τὰ ἑαυτῶν προΐεσθαι, ὥστε ἐξωνεῖσθαι τὸν κίνδυνον, ἐπικινδύνῳ δὲ μέλλοντας παραδίδοσθαι κολάσει, μὴ τοιαύτῃ κεχρῆσθαι οἰκονομίᾳ; ∆ιὰ δὴ τοῦτο φρόνιμον οἰκονόμον φησὶ τὸν ἐλεήμονα, ὀλίγου πολλὰ ἀγοράζοντα, χρημάτων τὸν οὐρανὸν ὠνούμενον, ἱματίου τὴν βασιλείαν, ἄρτου καὶ ψυχροῦ ποτηρίου τὰ μέλλοντα ἀγαθά. Ὅτι εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα οὐ σαλευθήσεται. Τί τῆς οἰκονομίας ταύτης ἴσον, ὅταν τοιαύτην ὁδὸν εὕρῃ τὴν ἀπαλλάττουσαν αὐτὸν τῶν ἀδοκήτων περιστάσεων, καὶ τῶν τοῦ βίου κλυδωνίων ἔξω ποιοῦσαν ὁρμίζεσθαι, καὶ ἄνθρωπος ὢν μηδὲν ἀνθρώπινον ὑπομένῃ, ἢ ὑπομένῃ μὲν, μὴ περιτρέπηται δέ; Τὸ γὰρ δὴ θαυμαστὸν τοῦτό ἐστιν, ὅταν τῇ τῶν πειρασμῶν ἐπαγωγῇ μὴ κλίνηται, μηδὲ ὑποσκελίζηται. Τί οὖν; οὐκ ἐσαλεύθησαν πολλοὶ τῶν ἐλεημόνων; Οὐδαμῶς. Εἰ γὰρ καὶ πένητες ἐγένοντο, καὶ πρὸς ἐσχάτην πτωχείαν μετηνέχθησαν, καὶ συμφοραῖς περιέπεσον, ἀλλ' ὅμως οὐ περιετράπησαν ἐννοοῦντες τὰ εἰργασμένα αὐτοῖς, καὶ τὴν εὔνοιαν τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ τὴν ἄνωθεν ῥοπὴν ἐπισπασάμενοι, καὶ ἰσχυράν τινα καὶ ἀσφαλῆ ἄγκυραν, τὸ χρηστὸν λέγω συνειδὸς, ἔχοντες. ∆ιά τοι τοῦτο οὐκ εἶπεν, ὅτι οὐκ ἐπιβουλευθήσονται, ἀλλ' ὅτι οὐ σαλευθήσονται. Ὃ δὴ καὶ ἐπ' ἐκείνου ἔλεγεν ὁ Χριστὸς, τοῦ τὴν οἰκοδομὴν ποιοῦντος ἐπὶ τῆς πέτρας, οὐχ ὅτι οὐχ ὑποστήσεται χειμῶνα, ἀλλ' ὅτι καὶ ὑπομένων χειμῶνα οὐ περιτραπήσεται. Τὸ γὰρ δὴ θαυμαστὸν τοῦτό ἐστιν, ὅταν μὴ ἐν ἐρημίᾳ τῶν πειρασμῶν τὸ ἀσφαλὲς αὐτῷ ᾖ, ἀλλὰ καὶ πυκνότητι τῶν μηχανημάτων ἀπερίτρεπτος μένῃ διηνεκῶς. Καὶ γὰρ ἀμήχανον ψυχὴν πλουτοῦσαν ἐλεημοσύνῃ ὑπὸ ἀηδίας παθῶν βαπτισθῆναί ποτε. Εἰς μνημόσυνον αἰώνιον ἔσται δίκαιος. Ὅρα αὐτὸν οὐκ ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τῆς ζωῆς, ἀλλὰ καὶ μετὰ τὴν τελευτὴν διδάσκοντα πολλοὺς καὶ κατηχοῦντα. Πῶς οὖν οὗτος ἐν τῷ ζῇν πείσεταί τι πονηρὸν, ὅταν καὶ τελευτῶν ἑτέροις διδάσκαλος γένηται εὐθυμίας; Ἵνα γὰρ μάθωσι καὶ οἱ σφόδρα ἄπιστοι, ὅτι ἀθάνατος αὐτοῦ ὁ καρπὸς ἐν οὐρανοῖς μένει, ἐνταῦθα δίδωσι τὴν πεῖραν· καὶ γὰρ τοῦ σώματος αὐτοῦ καταχωσθέντος, καὶ τῇ γῇ παραδοθέντος, ἡ μνήμη πανταχοῦ περιφέρεται. Τοιαύτη τῆς ἀρετῆς ἡ δύναμις· οὐκ εἴκει τῷ χρόνῳ, οὐ μαραίνεται τῷ πλήθει τῶν ἡμερῶν. Τοῦτο δὲ γίνεται διὰ τὴν τῶν πονηρῶν σωτηρίαν.
