a prophet speaking is after the return from Babylon; and for this reason he prophesied these things then, so that the Jews might not say that he means that confinement and that desolation in Babylon. For after those things were resolved, and they had returned to their former state, the angel says these things, indicating the desolation that happened under Vespasian and Titus, after which there will be no further change from that desolation. For the affairs of the Church succeeded. Therefore he says, that My name is great among the nations, that is, blessed, praised through their way of life; just as he also said here, Blessed is the name of the Lord. The Lord is high above all nations. Do you see again the nations accepting his worship, and not simply 55.302 one and two and three, but all throughout the world? What is clearer than this prophecy? But how is he high above all nations? Because we magnify him, not by adding height to him? Not at all; but by our doctrines, by our worship, by our adoration, by all other things, thinking nothing base, as the Jews do, but things much higher and greater. For such is this commonwealth; as much as heaven is higher than the earth, so much is this higher than the old one. Therefore he says: The Lord is high above all nations. For in addition to exalting him through worship, we also know this, that even these things are an act of condescension. So, even if they are higher than those in the old covenant, they are still inferior to his worth. And Paul, indicating these things, and presenting the difference between both kinds of knowledge, the one we now possess and the one that will be in the future, said: When I was a child, I thought as a child, I reasoned as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. And again: We know in part, and we prophesy in part. And, Now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. For through this he shows that this knowledge is as far from that future knowledge as a child is from a man who has come to full maturity. His glory is above the heavens. For since he has spoken of the praise and heightening that comes through the human commonwealth, and has exhorted to thus exalt God, thus praise, thus magnify, urging to greater virtue, he shows where this happens most of all. Where, then, does this happen? In the heavens. For there is his glory. For angels especially glorify him, not only from their own nature, but they also glorify him from their obedience in ministering to humans, precisely carrying out his will and his commands. Therefore he says: Mighty in strength, who do his word. Therefore also in the Gospels Christ commanded to pray, and to say: Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. That is, just as angels sanctify him, being free from all evil, and pursuing virtue with precision; so may we also be deemed worthy to sanctify him. Declaring this, he also added: His glory is above the heavens. For do not see only these visible created things on the earth, nor the good order in the heavens, but ascend with your mind from perceptible things to intelligible things, to the beauties of those substances, to the radiance of that commonwealth; and then you will know how his glory is in the heavens. Who is like the Lord our God, who dwells on high, and looks upon the humble things? Does not what has been said seem to be great? But when you consider about whom it is said, it will be very inadequate. Thus, as I was saying, one must not stop at the words, but must ascend with the mind. For how does he dwell in the heavens, 55.303 he who fills heaven and earth, who is present everywhere, who says: I am a God at hand, and not a God far off; He who has measured the heaven with a span, and the earth with a handful; who holds the circle of the earth? But since his discourse was with Jews, for this reason he for the time being uses the expression thus, little by little
