he should make his defense, since the one who has sinned has not first shown [fruits] worthy of repentance and analogous to the kind of the sin and undertaken the labors and produced its fruits; for the voice, the forerunner of the Word, says: “Produce fruits worthy of repentance, and do not presume to say to yourselves, we have Abraham as our father,” since our Lord himself also spoke thus concerning those who are foolishly disposed: “Truly I say to you, if even Moses and Daniel should stand, so as to deliver their sons and daughters, they shall not deliver them.” What then shall we do, or what way shall we who wish to repent devise for the remission of the debt and the restoration from the fall? Listen, as God grants, that I may set forth to each of you.
7. Seek out a mediator, if you wish, and a physician and a good counselor, so that, as a good counselor, he may suggest fitting ways of repentance with good counsel, and as a physician, he may apply to you a medicine suitable for each wound, and as a mediator, having stood face to face before Him, he may propitiate the Divinity on your behalf through prayer and intercession to God. Do not, therefore, finding a flatterer or a slave to his belly, strive to make him your counselor and ally, lest, by going along with your will, he teach you not what God loves, but what you yourself approve, and you remain again truly an irreconcilable enemy, nor an unskilled physician, lest by great severity and by untimely cuttings and (430) cauterizations he cast you into the abyss of despair, or again, through excessive sympathy, leave you sick while thinking you are well, and, what is most terrible, deliver you to eternal punishment when you do not expect it; for this is what the sickness of the soul here brings about for us when it dies along with us. But I do not think a mediator between God and men is found so simply. “For not all who are from Israel are Israelites,” but those who clearly understand according to the name and the very power of the name and are a mind that sees God, nor are all who are called by the name of Christ truly Christians. “'For not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord,' says Christ, 'will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father',” just as also “'Many,' he says, 'will say to me on that day: Lord, did we not cast out demons in your name, and I will say to them: Truly I say to you, I do not know you, depart from me, you workers of lawlessness'.”
8. For this reason, therefore, we all must pay attention, brothers, both those who mediate, and those who have sinned, and those themselves who wish to be reconciled to God, so that neither the mediators draw down wrath upon themselves instead of a reward, nor those who have given offense and are eager to be reconciled encounter an enemy and murderer and wicked counselor instead of a mediator. For such men will hear with a terrible threat: “Who appointed you rulers and judges of my people,” and again: “Hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.” And a log is a single passion or some desire that darkens the eye of the soul. And again: “Physician, heal yourself,” and again: “But to the sinner God said: Why (431) do you declare my statutes and take my covenant on your lips? But you hated instruction and cast my words behind you,” and Paul says: “Who are you to judge another's servant? To his own master he stands or falls; and God is able, through his faithful servant, to make him stand.”
