hairy, that is the heads of men, unless they were humbled by their own transgressions and sins. Therefore to those who are not such the Savior said: “But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.” For of these same disciples, even each hair of the more honorable part of the body, as necessary and contributing to the beauty of the whole, has been deemed worthy of divine numbering and protection; so that they might not be shaved with the razor of the enemies who walk about trampling down every hairy crown that conducts itself in its transgressions. “The Lord said: I will return from Bashan, I will return in the depths of the sea.” Again here too "the Lord" is not expressed by the tetragrammaton among the Hebrews, but by the more common letters. And now this present Scripture has indicated this for the third time, presenting what one might call a second Lord. Since also in the psalm that says: “The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand,” it was written with the unutterable four letters among the Hebrews. But the second, whom the prophet indicated as his own Lord by saying, “To my Lord,” was indicated by other letters, by which also every master of a servant among men is signified. So then here too, now for the third time, the Lord who descended even to Hades and made the issues of death has been named by the letters commonly written among the Hebrews. For which reason Symmachus translated him as “master.” This Lord then, that is, the Word of God Himself, said: “From Bashan I will return;” and again: “I will return from the depths of the sea.” And instead of “I will return,” and the second “I will return,” Symmachus translated in this manner: “The Lord said: From Bashan I will return, and I will cause to turn back from the depths of the sea.” Do you see what great deeds the Lord performed, having descended into the depths of the sea? he crushed the heads of the dragons on the water, and the hairs of his enemies who go about with “the hairy crown in transgressions” and he caused to return from Bashan and from the depths of the sea the souls that had long since been plunged down there. And Bashan is interpreted as shame, where for our sake the Lord who was indicated by the aforementioned letters went down, having despised the shame for the salvation of those who were enslaved there. Therefore it is said: “The Lord said: I will return from Bashan, I will return from the depths of the sea;” then what follows is said: “That your foot may be dipped in blood.” Instead of which Symmachus translated, saying: “That your foot may crush together with blood, and the tongue of your dogs may lap from each of your enemies.” For by shattering his own enemies and crushing their heads, he filled his own foot with blood, that which flowed from the heads of his enemy. Therefore it was said in Isaiah: “Who is this that comes from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah?” and what follows: “Why is your apparel red, and your garments like one who treads the winepress, full of what has been trodden?” Then he next answers to those who asked, and says: “I have trodden them in my fury.” And here, then, after the shattering of the heads of the dragons, it is said: “That your foot might crush with blood,” or, “That your foot may be dipped in blood, and the tongue of your dogs from the enemies by him.” Instead of which Symmachus translated more clearly, saying: “And the tongue of your dogs may lap from each of your enemies.” And the dogs of the Lord lapping the blood of his enemies, whom would you say they are other than those who guard his flocks, certain watchful guards, protecting his Church, or certain avenging powers intervening in the shattering of his enemies, and, as it were, trying to taste of their destruction? “Your goings were seen, O God, the goings of my God, of my king, who is in the holy place.” And these things have been added in consequence of what was said before. 23.709 For since the things being decreed
