my servant, whom I have chosen, my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased," neither Jacob nor Israel was mentioned. For it did not say, "Jacob my servant," "Israel my chosen one," but it brought it forth indefinitely, saying: "Behold my servant" and "my beloved." 9.15.5 Wherefore, since it is not found in the Hebrew of the prophecy, the name of Jacob and the name of Israel is marked with an obelus in the Septuagint, and is passed over in silence by the other interpreters, since it is not found in the Hebrew. 9.15.6 Hence it is reasonably not mentioned by the evangelist, being a Hebrew and setting forth the prophecy in accordance with the Hebrew scripture. Therefore, the things prophesied do not even in thought apply to the people of the circumcision, but only to the Christ of God, who is attested by the clarity and the foundation of the facts. For he alone proclaimed the coming "judgment to the Gentiles," having come quietly into the life of men, and establishing judgment on the earth; and not only "did he not break a bruised reed," but, if one may say so, he bound it up, raising and making strong the weak and "the brokenhearted." 9.15.7 And just as he did not overlook the weak and unsound and those in need of his healing, nor did he crush the repentant by condemning them, so also he did not quench those who persisted in evils and were inflamed by passions by hindering them from acting according to their own choice, nor did he punish any of them at the wrong time, deferring their deserved punishment to the time of the universal judgment. 9.15.8 Wherefore it is said: "and a smoldering wick he will not quench."
