with Christ saying, Woe to you who laugh, for you will weep? You sing these things every day. For what do you say, tell me? that I laughed? Not at all; but what? I have grown weary with my groaning. But perhaps there are some so dissolute and loose as to laugh even at this rebuke, because we are discoursing about laughter. For such is frenzy, such is madness; it does not even perceive the rebuke. The priest of God stands offering up the prayer of all, and you laugh, fearing nothing? and he offers up the prayers on your behalf, and you show contempt? Do you not hear the Scripture saying, Woe to the scorners? Do you not shudder? Do you not compose yourself? And when you enter a palace, you adorn yourself in posture and gaze and gait and all other things; but here, where the true palace is, and such as is heavenly, you laugh? I know, then, that you do not see; but hear that angels are present everywhere, and especially in the house of God they stand by the King, and everything is filled with those incorporeal powers. This word of mine is also to women, who in the presence of men do not dare to do this readily; and even if they do, not always, but at a time of relaxation; but here, always. You cover your head, tell me, and you laugh, O woman, while sitting in church? You entered to confess your sins, to fall down before God, to pray and supplicate for the things you have wickedly done, and you do this with laughter? How then will you be able to propitiate him? And what evil is there in laughter, he says? Laughter is not evil, but what is beyond measure, what is untimely, is evil. Laughter is implanted in us, so that when we see friends after a long time, we may do this; when we see some who are downcast and afraid, we may relieve them with a smile, not so that we may guffaw and laugh always; laughter is implanted in our soul, that the soul may be relaxed at times, not that it may be dissipated; for the desire of bodies is also implanted in us, and it is not at all necessary, because it is implanted, to use it or not to use it immoderately; but we control it, and we do not say, Since it is implanted, let us use it. Serve God with tears, that you may be able to wash away your sins. I know that many mock us, saying, Immediately tears. For this reason, it is a time for tears. I know that some also prophesy, saying, Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die. Vanity of vanities, all is vanity. I do not say this, but he who had experience of all things 63.879 says these things. I built houses for myself, I planted vineyards, pools of water, I made for myself male and female cupbearers; and what indeed after all these things? Vanity of vanities, all is vanity. Let us mourn, therefore, beloved, let us mourn, that we may truly laugh, that we may truly rejoice at the time of sincere joy. For with this joy, grief is always mixed, and it is never possible to find it pure; but that joy is sincere and guileless, having nothing deceitful, nor 63.880 mixed in; let us enjoy that joy, let us pursue that one. Otherwise, it is not possible to attain it, except by choosing here not what is pleasant, but what is profitable, and by willingly being afflicted a little, and bearing all things with thanksgiving. For thus we shall be able to attain the kingdom of heaven; of which may we all be counted worthy in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom be glory to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
HOMILY 44. On compunction and patience and desire for the good things to come;
and on the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. I beseech you, brethren, not only from present things concerning God's
to judge of providence, but also from the things to come. For present things are a contest
