conspiracy; from the scriptures noted below. 1. From Psalm 40. 2. From Psalm 54. 3. From Psalm 108. 4. From Zechariah. 5. From Jeremiah. Concerning the things that happened around the time of his passion. 6. From Amos. 7. From Zechariah. 8. From Psalm 21. The Tenth Book of the Evangelical Demonstration. After the prophecies which have been given concerning the advent among men of the proclaimed god, the time now calls for us to go through the things concerning his departure from his life among men, and to consider again what sort of things were divinely decreed from ancient prophetic times to happen to him. 10.Prooem.2 But first I will go through the things concerning those who conspired for his death, which are no small part of the present proposition. But before the argument, we must keep in mind what has often been said by us concerning the economy regarding him, that indeed some things are conceived with respect to his divinity, and others with respect to his incarnation. 10.Prooem.3 For in one place he is introduced as being the Word of God and the power of God and the wisdom of God, 'the angel of great counsel,' and a great and eternal high priest, making sacrifice and propitiating the Father on behalf of the creation and salvation of all generated things; and in another place 'the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world' and a 'sheep led to the slaughter'; and this was the human tabernacle, which, like some high priest, taking it in the manner of a lamb and a sheep from our flock and making a holy offering of the firstfruit of the human race, he brought to the Father, through which he also communed with the nature of men, which was not otherwise able to become a hearer of the Word of God and of an incorporeal and intellectual power, nor to conceive of anything greater than flesh and bodies through eyes of flesh. 10.Prooem.4 Therefore, whatever things might seem to be said of him in a more humble way in the present matters, these things suggest that we should understand them of the lamb of God who takes away 'the sin of the world' and the human tabernacle. For he was the 'lamb' 'taking away the sin of the world' according to John the Baptist, who said, 'Behold the lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world,' and he was also the lamb led to slaughter according to the oracle in Isaiah which says: 'He was led as a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is silent'. 10.Prooem.5 And concerning the same one, as concerning a lamb, it was also said: 'for the sins of my people he was led to death'. For it was necessary for the lamb of God, who was taken up by the great high priest on behalf of the other kindred lambs and on behalf of the entire human flock, to be offered as a sacrifice to God 10.Prooem.6 'For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection from the dead,' says the apostle, and 'as by one transgression judgment came upon all men to condemnation, so also by one act of righteousness the free gift came to all men to justification of life'. 10.Prooem.7 Whence he himself also taught his own disciples that he was life and light and truth and the other concepts of the theology concerning him, but to those uninitiated in the mysteries concerning him he said: Why 'do you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth?' Therefore, just as the properties of his theology have been set forth in the previous sections, in the same way here also the human sufferings of the lamb will be presented, with the things before his passion being in the middle, having comprehended both at once, those things pertaining to his divinity and those pertaining to his humanity. 10.Prooem.8 Since these things have been usefully observed by us beforehand, let us now take up the oracles themselves concerning Judas the betrayer and the conspiracy that was made with him against Christ, and concerning the things that happened around the time of his passion. 10.1.1 From Psalm 40. 'Blessed is he that considers the poor and needy, in the evil day the Lord will deliver him. The Lord will preserve him, and keep him alive, and bless him upon the earth, and not deliver him into the hands of his enemies. The Lord will help him on his bed of suffering, you have turned all his bed in his sickness
