on the hands two other such seals and on both knees 2.286 two others, and together the five seals stamped from gold, and they carry around the wooden image, having circled the central shrine seven times with flutes and drums and hymns and having reveled they bring it down again to the underground place. And when asked what this mystery is, they answer and say that at this hour today the Kore, that is, the virgin, has given birth to the Aion. And this happens thus also in the city of Petra—it is the metropolis of Arabia, which is Edom, written in the scriptures—in the idol-shrine there, and in the Arabic dialect they sing hymns to the virgin, calling her in Arabic Chaamou, that is Kore, 2.287 or virgin, and the one born from her Dousares, that is, the only-begotten of the lord. This also happens in the city of Elousa on that night, as it does there in Petra and in Alexandria. And we were compelled by many things to present for the unbelievers that the Epiphany is rightly called the birth in the flesh of the savior which happened in Bethlehem, he having been born in the eighth hour and having appeared to the shepherds and to the world through the witness of the angels; and he appeared also to Mary and to Joseph. And at that hour the star also appeared in the east to the magi two years before their arrival in Jerusalem and Bethlehem, at which time Herod inquired precisely from the magi themselves the time of the appeared star and heard from them that it was from two years and under, which very word of the Epiphanies took its name from Herod's saying "of the appeared star". Therefore, when they said, "Where is the king of the Jews who has been born? For we have seen his star in the east and have come to worship him," Herod did not investigate the matter as about the mere name of a human king. For having considered the matter and marveling that many kings were born in Jerusalem, first Saul from the tribe of Benjamin, second David from the tribe of Judah and his son Solomon, and Solomon's son Rehoboam and his sons in succession, and never for any of these when they were born did a star appear nor did a coming of magi occur to come and worship the newborn king but only then, -from which someone considering this and having sharpened his mind 2.288 toward the knowledge of the truth, learned that this sign is not of a man, but of the Lord alone. Therefore he no longer asked about an earthly or human king, but about Christ, saying to the scribes and priests, "Where is the Christ born?" And he heard from them, "In Bethlehem of Judea"; and having asked them, he knew the place, and from the magi, the time. For the magi themselves also, after two years on the very day of the Epiphany, came to Bethlehem and brought gifts, both myrrh and gold and frankincense. For on that very day of the Epiphany were the beginnings of many events, signs of the appearance. And this was the day, as I said before and am often compelled to say, in the thirteenth consulship of Octavius Augustus and of Silanus, on the eighth day before the Ides of January, after thirteen days of the increase of light and day, which is from the winter solstice, that is, from the eighth day before the Kalends of January until the very day of the nativity and Epiphany because of the previously declared type, the savior himself and his twelve disciples fulfilling the thirteenth number. The savior is therefore born in the forty-second year of Augustus, king of the Romans, in the aforementioned consulship, twenty-nine years after the association of Augustus with the Jews; and Augustus reigned thirteen years before Judea was completely annexed to the Romans. And it was also since Augustus reigned over
