the wickedness of men has sprouted up against me, it needs the Siren of Isocrates, the grandiloquence of Pindar, the rush of Polemon, the Homeric Calliope, the lyre of Sappho or some other power beyond these. For there is no calamity, not small, not greater, not near, not farther off, which has not at once burst upon us. And indeed the surge clearly overwhelmed, and from then until now and until I write this treatise, the sea of misfortunes traffics with me and waves upon waves overtake me. But I have been unwittingly swept away into my own misfortunes; now, therefore, having come to my senses, I will swim back up as if making a return current and I might return to my first starting points. 14.7.5 Some things, therefore, as I said, I have from myself, and others I learned in various ways about these things from those who campaigned with the emperor and through certain messengers who conveyed to us the events of the wars, and especially I often heard about these things from the emperor himself and George Palaiologos narrating them in person. And I collected many of these things, and most excellently during the reign of the third who held the scepters of the empire after my father, when all flattery and falsehood had passed away with his grandfather himself, since all men flatter the reigning throne, but toward the one who has passed away they show no flattery, but narrate the events stripped bare and speak of them just as they happened. 14.7.6 For I, lamenting my own misfortunes, at this time mourning three sovereigns, my father and emperor, and my lady and mother and empress, and my, alas, husband the Caesar, for the most part I remain in a corner and am devoted to books and to God. And it will not be permitted even for the most obscure of men to visit us, let alone those through whom we could learn things which they happened to have heard from others, and those most intimate with my father. For this is the thirtieth year, by the souls of the most blessed emperors, I have not looked upon, I have not seen, I have not spoken with a man of my father's household, on the one hand because many have passed away, and on the other because many are kept away by fear on account of the tide of affairs. For the rulers have condemned us to these outrages, that we should not even be spectators but hated by the majority. 14.7.7 What I have gathered for the history, God knows, and His super-cosmic Mother and my Lady knows, I collected from certain unpretentious and altogether unpolished writings and from old men who had served in the army at that time when my father took hold of the scepters of the Romans, but who had experienced misfortunes and been transformed from the turmoil of the world to the serene state of monks. For the writings that fell into my hands were simple in style and unadorned and adhered to the truth, and displayed nothing elegant nor did they drag along any rhetorical bombast. And the things narrated by the older men adhered to the same style and thought of the writings; and from them I deduced the truth of the history, comparing and cross-examining what was recorded by me with what was said by them, and what was said by them with what was from myself, which I myself had often heard from my father himself and from my uncles on my father's and mother's side. From all of which the entire body of truth is woven together. 14.7.8 But let my narrative stick to what I said above about Kamytzes’ escape from the barbarians and his address to the citizens.
