of those who have fallen asleep. For the righteous, even if he dies, is not dead, but sleeps. For he who is about to be sent to a better life, sleeps; but he who is about to be led away to an immortal death, even while living has died, and is a corpse. Those descend into hades; these will ascend to heaven, and will be with Christ. For this very reason the Prophet did not simply say, The living, but, We who are living, adding that which pertains to himself. And why did he not say, The living, but added, We? Because Paul also said thus, that We who are living, who are left, shall not precede at the coming of the Lord. Just as there the addition of, We, does not permit what is said to be about all, but about the faithful, and those who are like him in their way of life; so also here the, We who are living, speaks of those according to David, and those who live in virtue. From now and unto the age. Do you see the conclusion also showing this? This, what? That he is speaking of those who live according to virtue. For no one lives this life for ever, but only those, who also live the life with glory perpetually. For sinners also live; but in punishment and chastisement, and in the gnashing of teeth; but these in splendor and renown, having the task of offering mystical hymns to God with the incorporeal powers. Therefore, that we too may enjoy this joy, let us pursue this life, so that we may also come to that inheritance, which neither word, nor mind, nor any other thing will be able to represent, but only 55.315 experience itself shows its blessedness; may it be that we all attain it, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ; to whom be glory and power, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
ON THE 114TH PSALM.
I loved, because the Lord will hear the voice of my supplication.
1. And who does not love being heard? he says. Many of worldly men. For they do not want to hear these things, which are profitable for them, but they ask for things that are not profitable for them to happen; then when it happens, they are distressed, and are discontented. For the profitable things are those which God knows and understands to be profitable for us, whether you say poverty, or famine, or sickness, or anything else of the sort. And what God deems to be profitable and gives, these are the beneficial things. Since also hear what he says to Paul: My grace is sufficient for you; for my power is made perfect in weakness. For this was profitable for him, persecutions, and afflictions, and distresses. And having heard that this was profitable, he would say: Therefore I am well pleased in weaknesses, in insults, in persecutions. So it is not for ordinary people to rejoice, when God heeds them, providing what is profitable. Many, at any rate, want unprofitable things, and delight in them; but the Prophet not so, but what? He loved, because God heard him, giving what was profitable. Because he inclined his ear to me. Again with human words he represents the will of God. And he hints at something else through this saying, saying that I was not worthy to be heard, but He Himself descended to me. And in my days I will call upon him. What is, In my days? Not because, he says, I was heard, will I leap away, and become more lazy, but all my days I will make this my work. The pains of death surrounded me, the dangers of hades found me. I found affliction and pain; and I called upon the name of the Lord. Did you see a strong weapon? did you see a comfort that dissolves all terrible things? did you see a soul warmed by the
